General notices

  • JavaScript programmers are needed at WT:WPPORT. The portal system is being overhauled. They could really use some input from JS programmers on what is possible.
  • A project is under way to add short descriptions to all articles. This is mainly for the benefit of mobile users searching Wikipedia. Help is welcomed – please visit WikiProject Short descriptions to learn more.
  • The Portals Project is leading an overhaul and general upgrade of the entire portals system, including new automated features to make building, updating, and maintaining portals easier. We are also working on the development of components to make portals self-updating. You are welcome to join in on the fun.
  • Announcing SearchSuite. It provides user control over search results: it can strip them down to a single-spaced list, sort, and more. Most of its features are presented as menu item toggles to turn each feature on/off. Each menu-item-controlled feature works on the output of all the others, in both their on and off states. Feedback and feature suggestions welcome.
  • Following the autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL), the community has decided that autoconfirmed status will henceforward be required in order to create new articles.
  • Do you have need for a specialized script that doesn't exist yet, or have an idea for a cool new script or gadget? Post requests and ideas at Wikipedia:User scripts/Requests.
  • Free subscriptions to high-quality paywalled journals, newspaper archives, and online reference works are available for Wikipedia editors. For more information, see Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library/Databases

  • Portal:Space - The selected article excerpts were copied and pasted between 2006 and 2009. The leads of the corresponding articles have greatly improved since then.
  • Portal:Thinking - "Selected" sections need new material. Been the same for years.
The following portals have interesting design features that you may find useful:
  • Portal:South East England - A "parent" portal that uses selected content from several "child" portals, chosen at random for each type of content.
  • Portal:Philosophy - Automatically cycles through 52 "Selected philosophers", one per week, year after year.
  • Portal:Arts - Uses random generators to display random featured status selections.

How to add hidden editor notes in an article

Have you ever needed to post an important message to all editors about an article, on the article itself, but thought it would stick out like a sore thumb and ruin the article if you did? Are you reverting many edits on an article because editors just aren't seeing the important message or special instructions on the talk page?

The solution is that you can insert hidden text in the article! That way, only the people editing the page will see your message! Here is how to insert a hidden comment:

  1. First, begin the comment by typing <!--
  2. Once you have done that, type what you need the editors to read
  3. Then, end the comment by typing -->

Once you have completed those 3 easy steps, you won't be reverting as many mistakes!

For example, the following hidden comment has been used in the Meaning of life article, in the Popular views section:

<!--Please do not add 42 in this section. It is covered under the section titled "Popular culture treatments". Thank you.-->

Some more examples of pages that have hidden messages include:
