Identification
Round, oval, or shield-shaped. Highly convex, explanate (helmet-like, with a flared "rim"). Often black with 2-6 red or orange spots; sometimes red or orange with or without spots; two species metallic blue.

Larvae: usually black, sometimes with pale or red markings, always with long "spines."
Food
Scale insects, especially armored scales. Sometimes aphids, psyllids, and other soft-bodied insects and larvae.
