First of all: your individual WordPress installation has no connection whatsoever to wordpress.org in terms of users. Therefore, there is no point in trying to log in here with these users.

The reason for the error should be visible in the error log. You can find it in your hosting area. If necessary, the support of your hosting can help you.

Alternatively, you could also enable debugging in WordPress. How to do this is described here: https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/ – also here the support of your hosting can help you if necessary to edit the file accordingly.

In both cases you should be able to see what the cause is in the logfile.

Hi there @smilligan, I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. I know how worrying it is when you can’t login to your site.

Because this is a self-hosted WordPress.org site, WordPress.org can’t access or reset your site directly. This is almost certainly a critical PHP error caused by a plugin, theme, or recent server change.

Please try the steps below to fix the issue:

    1. Try Disabling plugins via FTP or File Manager, rename /wp-content/plugins/ to something like plugins-old and try logging in again.
    2. Contact your hosting provider to check the PHP error log or enable WP_DEBUG, then attempt to log in again.

If disabling plugins or switching the theme restores access, you’ll pinpoint the exact source of the problem. Additionally, your hosting provider can help restore a backup if necessary.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Just wanted to comment back that the problem has been resolved. For others who may have this issue as well, it was an issue with an out dated theme conflicting with the current PHP. After talking with our hosting provider, they downgraded our PHP and I was able to log in with no issues to update the theme. I am a complete novice at this, usually only adding pages and updates to our site, so I greatly appreciate the feed back. Thank you!
