A new article published in 'Slavic Review', from University of Cambridge researcher Ekaterina Zadirko, reveals the struggles of teenage boys in Stalinist Russia. 'Slavic Review' is published on behalf of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES). Read more â¬ï¸
What was it like to be a teenage boy in Stalinist Russia? We now have more than an inkling, thanks to a remarkable trove of 25 never-before-studied diaries from that era. Research by Ekaterina Zadirko, a Slavonic Studies expert from Trinity College Cambridge, has revealed the struggles of teenage boys in 1930s Russia, from love, lust, and boredom, to famine, exile, and conscription under Stalin. âIn 1930s Russia, writing was a key strategy for teenage boys to process their coming of age and find their place in society,â Zadirko says. âThe diaries show that Soviet people, including teenagers, were many things all at once, trying to assemble their identity and make sense of the world with what they were given.â The diarists ranged from sons of intelligentsia to that of peasants - a rarity in itself - and focused on the literary potential of their self-writing.
