HISTORIC NOTES Philco was a major germanium transistor manufacturer in the 1950s, and was the industry leader the area of high frequency radio and computer transistors this leadership was based on the famous surface barrier transistor technology developed by Philco in the early 1950s. A variety of surface barrier transistors were manufactured by Philco, including the 2N128, 2N501, SB100, SB101 and SB102. The A01 was a surface barrier device and appears to be the product of a sales tactic used by Philco to market lower performing transistors to the hobbyist market. Likely the A01 was the label stamped on the case of any remaining transistors which wouldnt pass either frequency or gain requirements for other SB types. The 1957 Lafayette Radio catalog lists the A01 for $1.90, which was the lowest price of all SB types sold. The A01 was used in a number of hobbyist projects and even made it into production radio the unique two transistor Regency XR-2A earphone radio. |
