Our Approach
As AARP's charitable affiliate, AARP Foundation creates and advances effective solutions to reduce poverty for and with older adults. Through our grantmaking, we collaborate with organizations to advance projects that can become sustainable solutions to the challenges facing older adults living with low income.Â
AARP Foundation works to support vulnerable older adults. We help older adults increase their financial stability by connecting them with employment opportunities, assisting with benefit applications, and ensuring they receive tax refunds for which they qualify. Our work is designed to reach all older adults facing economic challenges, with particular attention to removing obstacles that may prevent access to resources and opportunities.
AARP Foundation is currently concentrating its efforts in 22 U.S. states and territories with high rates of senior poverty: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico.

What We Fund
Generating Income/Earnings
We fund grants that increase income or earnings for older adults with low income. This includes workforce programs that provide upskilling or reskilling opportunities, such as work-based learning opportunities or other pathways that help older workers gain the skills needed for high-quality employment.
Gaining Access to Benefits
We fund grants that help older adults with low income secure benefits. This includes benefits that enable older adults to support their health and wellbeing by reducing the financial burden of essential expenses, such as health care, housing and food.
Securing Refunds/Credits
We fund grants that help older taxpayers secure the refunds and credits they've earned. This includes free tax preparation, assistance applying for property tax relief, and helping eligible taxpayers access the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).Â
Supporting Disaster Relief
When natural disasters strike, AARP Foundation takes action. With support of our donors and sponsors, AARP Foundation distributes grants to local organizations that help those affected get immediate relief â including food, water and shelter â as well as long term support to help seniors repair their homes, access legal aid and obtain financial assistance.
