The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee commends Portugal for its contributions to NATOThe Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach visited Portugal from 1 to 4 November 2018. The trip included visits to NATO Joint Analysis and Lessons Learned Centre, the Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, the Joint Command for Military Operations as well as meetings with the Portuguese Minister of Defence, HE João Gomes Cravinho and the Chief of Defence, Admiral António Silva Ribeiro. |

NATO continues to strengthen Iraqi security structures through new mission in IraqOn 31 October 2018, a new NATO-led mission in Iraq started its work to further develop Iraq’s security institutions and structures. The new mission, called NATO Mission Iraq, was launched at the NATO Summit held in Brussels on 11 and 12 July 2018, following a request by the Iraqi government. The mission is led by Major General Dany Fortin of the Canadian Armed Forces, and builds on prior training and capacity-building efforts carried out in the country since January 2017 by NATO civilian and military personnel. |

NATO and UN conclude updated Joint Declaration on cooperationFollowing the meeting of Secretaries General Jens Stoltenberg and António Guterres on the margins of the 73rd UN General Assembly in September, the Secretariats of NATO and the United Nations concluded an updated Joint Declaration on Friday 26 October 2018, setting out plans for future cooperation between the two organizations. The document builds on the original Joint Declaration between NATO and the UN, which was signed in September 2008. The updated Declaration sets out priority areas for future cooperation, including, support to UN peace operations, countering terrorism; the protection of civilians; and Women, Peace and Security. |
