New Terminology Release API Endpoint

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new API endpoint for NLM terminology releases. This endpoint provides an updated list of releases for RxNorm, SNOMED CT, and UMLS. You can use this endpoint to completely automate the retrieval of the latest release files without having to manually download the files. For example, if you load RxNorm data weekly or monthly, you can monitor our release API and automatically download the data immediately when it becomes available.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce the July 2023 International Edition of SNOMED CT is available for download.

Plan to move the International Monthly release date to the first of each month

After consultation with the community, SNOMED International will be changing the dates of the International Edition from the end of each month, to the first of each month. This will mean that in addition to all of the other months, the â€œJanuaryâ€ release would move from 31st January to the 1st January, and the â€œJulyâ€ release would move from 31st July to 1st July each year. The July 2023 International Edition will therefore be the final Release to be published at the end of the month.

Orphanet addition and removal of NCI Thesaurus sub-sources

Source vocabulary updates for the upcoming 2022AB UMLS release: Orphanet Nomenclature of Rare Diseases NLM is excited to add Orphanet, a source of rare disease content, to the UMLS Metathesaurus. This addition is based in part on work done by SNOMED International and INSERM to produce a mapping between SNOMED CT and Orphanet. Orphanet will be updated biannually with each UMLS release. NCI sub-sources We are making changes to the representation of the NCI Thesaurus in the UMLS. We are retaining all content with the â€œNCIâ€ Thesaurus source abbreviation, but we are planning to remove content from all NCI Thesaurus sub-sources. A list of the sub-sources can be found on the NCI Thesaurus source vocabulary documentation page. Users interested in the codes and names from the NCI Thesaurus sub-sources can still find them in the NCI Thesaurus: http://ncit.nci.nih.gov. Questions? New Global Patient Set refset available for download

SNOMED International is pleased to announce the September 2021 SNOMED Global Patient Set (GPS) refset is available for download. This yearâ€™s GPS includes all the COVID-19 and vaccine related SNOMED CT content currently available in the July 2021 SNOMED CT International Edition, including an updated SNOMED CT to ICD-10 map. In addition to the tab-separated values (TSV) file, this refset is also available in RF2 format, and both are downloadable from the SNOMED GPS Webpage on the SNOMED International website. The Global Patient Set is produced by SNOMED International and is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. The GPS is made available to users at no cost. The Global Patient Set (GPS) is a managed collection of existing SNOMED CT reference sets released by SNOMED International. The GPS is comprised of unique identifiers, fully specified names (FSN), preferred terms in international English, and active/inactive status flags. The GPS excludes SNOMED CTâ€™s inherent relationships and hierarchies; fundamental to the nature of an ontology and its ability to enable clinical data analytics, decision support, artificial intelligence, etc. Further, concept synonyms and definitions are not provided as part of the GPS. This release contains 501 new active concepts specific to the US Extension and also includes the SNOMED CT COVID-19 Related Content published in the July 2021 SNOMED CT International Edition. NOTICE of significant changes in the September 2021 US Edition release: Following on from the successful technical previews of the impending Concrete Domains changes, released in September 2020 and February 2021 respectively, SNOMED International implemented these changes in the July 2021 International Edition Production release. This constituted drug concept strengths and counts expressed as concrete values in a new Relationships file. These files have therefore been propagated through into the September 2021 US Edition release package. eCQM Value Sets for 2021 Reporting Available in VSAC

On May 07, 2020, The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Value Set Authority Center (VSAC), in collaboration with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), published the eCQM annual update for the 2021 reporting period for Eligible Hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals (CAH), and the 2021 performance period for Eligible Professionals and Eligible Clinicians. CMS updates the specifications annually to align with current clinical guidelines and code systems, so they remain relevant and actionable within the clinical care setting. These updated eCQMs are used to electronically report 2021 clinical quality measure data for CMS quality reporting programs. Measures will not be eligible for 2021 reporting unless and until they are proposed and finalized through notice-and-comment rulemaking for each applicable program.

NLM VSAC Publishes Updated Electronic Clinical Quality Measure Value Sets for 2020 Reporting

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Value Set Authority Center (VSAC), in collaboration with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), published the eCQM annual update for the 2020 reporting period for Eligible Hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals (CAH), and the 2020 performance period for Eligible Professionals and Eligible Clinicians. CMS updates the specifications annually to align with current clinical guidelines and code systems, so they remain relevant and actionable within the clinical care setting. These updated eCQMs are used to electronically report 2020 clinical quality measure data for CMS quality reporting programs. Measures will not be eligible for 2020 reporting unless and until they are proposed and finalized through notice-and-comment rulemaking for each applicable program. The 2020 reporting/performance period eCQM value sets are available through the National Library of Medicineâ€™s Value Set Authority Center (VSAC). Sign up for Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) account to access the value sets. The value sets are available as a complete set, as well as value sets per eCQM. March 2018 SNOMED CT US Edition is now available for download

In addition to 363 new concepts specific for the US, the March 2018 SNOMED CT US Edition also contains all of the content from the January 2018 SNOMED CT International Edition. Approximately 200 requests for terminology additions and updates were submitted via the US Content Request System (US CRS) to support US clinical health information data exchange. This latest version of the US Edition also includes the SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CM mapping reference set, with over 122,000 SNOMED CT source concepts mapped to ICD-10-CM targets. The mapping refset is also released as a standalone download.

February 2018 RxNorm Release Available for Download

The RxNorm February 2018 Release is now available for download and contains the last expected version of the Veterans Health Administrationâ€™s (VHA) National Drug File-Reference Terminology (NDF-RT). The VHA plans to cease publication of NDF-RT and begin releasing Medication Reference Terminology (MED-RT) in its place in the first quarter of 2018, with the anticipated first release of MED-RT to be March 5th. The last release of NDF-RT is planned to be February 2018 which will be in the February RxNorm release and will remain in the RxNorm full monthly releases for at least six months. There are no plans to include MED-RT in RxNorm; however, MED-RT will be included in the UMLS Metathesaurus along with RxNorm and its source vocabularies.

NLM's 5th annual Jamboree will take place Tuesday, September 19, 2017, in the Lister Hill Auditorium at NLM on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. Speakers from the Federal government, industry, pharmacy standards groups, and others will be present. The emphasis as always is on practical and novel ways to use and understand this free drug information, which is produced and consumed by a number of Federal agencies. Registration is required, and seating is limited. While the proceedings will be webcast and archived, in-person attendance offers greater opportunity to exchange ideas, questions, and insights with your peers. When downloading the full data set or exporting your search results, choose the delimited text file option. These text files can be imported into Excel for easy viewing. They can also be imported into Microsoft Access, Oracle, MySQL, or another relational database application, where you can link these tables to easily query and manipulate the data. Detailed instructions are available. Bulk import scripts for Oracle and MySQL are also available.

UMLS REST API beta is available for use

In response to user input, NLM has developed a beta version of a UMLS REST API along with sample code on github to showcase interacting with the API in common languages such as Python, Perl, and Java. The beta version supports the most frequently needed use cases such as: term searching, retrieving UMLS CUIs, retrieving information for CUIs and source-asserted identifiers, and extracting subsets. Additional features are in development.

New NLM Resource for Nursing Standards and Interoperability

The page is a resource for nurses, students, informaticians and anyone interested in nursing terminologies for systems development. It describes the role of SNOMED CT and Laboratory Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) in implementing Meaningful Use in the United States, specifically for the nursing and care domain. Two New SNOMED CT Cooperative Project Releases

Baseline Release of the SNOMED CT to ICNP Cooperative Project - The release is a baseline release and aligned to the July 2015 SNOMED CT International release.
Updated Technology Preview of the LOINC-SNOMED CT Cooperative Project - This release includes both the LOINC Term to SNOMED CT Expression reference set and the LOINC Part to SNOMED CT Map reference set. This Technology Preview is dependent upon, and should be evaluated in the context of the July 2015 SNOMED CT International Release.
