You’re invited: Help make Dryad better for data science
Are you a researcher who does data science? Do you use computational methods in your research, practice informatics, or conduct meta-analyses?
We want to make it simpler and more effective for researchers like you to reuse Dryad data.
We’re looking for researchers in any field to join our user testing group. As a member, you’ll have exclusive access to early looks at potential changes and new features and help us make them work for your research.
Plus, as a thank you for your time and insights, participants in our feedback surveys and user testing sessions may be entered into drawings for exciting prizes.
Volunteers will be contacted a few times a year to provide feedback on features designed to support data scientists. Previous feature enhancements have included:

Dryad is seeking a Head of Data Publishing. This newly conceived role builds on Dryad’s 18 years of experience curating and openly publishing research data, as well as our unique position in research communication, and helps prepare us to navigate another exciting new era in data sharing.
The Head of Data Publishing is a special opportunity to operationalise Dryad’s strategy and is suited to someone with strong experience in publishing operations and team leadership.
Job description
Dryad’s core service to the global research community is supporting authors to prepare their data for open sharing and reuse and publish it on the Dryad platform. Our Head of Data Publishing defines data publishing, in terms of the Dryad vision, mission, values, and value proposition, and champions the development of data-specific standards and principles in response to growing interest in data sharing and reuse. The role reports to the Executive Director.
Responsibilities
- Data publishing – Execute a data publishing program that delivers on Dryad’s commitment to partners and advances our vision, mission and values; leverage best practice from scientific and scholarly publishing to direct our data publishing program, while also leading the development of new, data-specific principles and standards; and pioneer use of emerging technologies to enhance our service.
- Team leadership – Lead the data curation team, ensuring the team is well-supported, effectively resourced to deliver the service, and well-integrated with the wider organization; manage recruitment, on-boarding and training processes, as well as growth and development for individual team members.
- Resource management – Ensure that internal and external documentation is maintained in line with Dryad’s latest policies and procedures.
- Budget oversight – Develop, manage, and monitor the department budget; ensure alignment with organizational financial goals; allocate resources to maximize efficiency and effectiveness while adhering to allocated budget limits.
- Curation and author support – Serve as the highest point of escalation in resolving publishing issues; contribute to curation and help desk as needed.
- Planning – Cultivate and maintain an understanding of the research data space; contribute to Dryad strategy development; provide support to colleagues across the organization in the smooth and powerful execution of Dryad strategy and programs.
Skills and qualifications
Dryad’s Head of Data Publishing is:
- A confident and experienced publishing operations professional, fluent with established best practice and norms and prepared to pioneer new approaches
- A superior customer service manager, with a track record in publishing and author service
- A skilled team leader who effectively balances team interests with those of the organization
- An excellent communicator, in writing and in person
- Independently motivated, willing and able to identify and assume responsibility for initiatives within the scope of this role
They also:
- Have minimum ten years’ experience (full-time or equivalent) in academic publishing, or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
- Have minimum five years’ experience (full-time or equivalent) managing people
- Be educated to degree level or with equivalent professional experience
- Possess expert-level confidence with submission and publishing platforms (such as Editorial Manager, eJournal Press)
Compensation and benefits
This is a remote position requiring a minimum of 30 hours per week.
The full-time equivalent salary range for this role is:
- $83,000 – 100,000 USD, in the United States
- £62,000 – 75,000 GBP, in the UK
The salary offer will depend on experience.

Enthusiasm for Open Science
First and foremost, we need board members who deeply believe in the importance of Open Science and data sharing. You should be passionate about creating an ecosystem where research data is openly available and routinely reused.
Experience with research data systems
We’re looking for individuals with practical experience in research data management, data repositories, or infrastructure supporting the research data lifecycle. This might include:
- Working with data repositories or other scholarly infrastructure
- Implementing data management and sharing policies
- Building or supporting data research systems
- Understanding of technical challenges in data preservation and access
Skills in key strategic areas
As Dryad evolves as an organization, we’re particularly focused on reaching new communities, diversifying our revenue profile, and continuing to build long-term financial success. Our board competency assessment indicates we especially need expertise in:
- Finance & development – especially with prior nonprofit leadership experience, to support continued organizational growth and cost management
- Marketing & fundraising – to contribute to identifying business areas needing stronger representation, increasing visibility, and supporting fundraising
- Legal & compliance – To help ensure Dryad is prepared for today’s regulatory environment
- Business & product strategy – Thinking strategically about Dryad’s future as a product and service, and providing high-level framing of competencies that support sustainability
We are also interested in:
- Expanding the international representation on our board. As a global organization serving researchers worldwide, we believe that diverse geographic perspectives are essential to our mission and governance.
