Wednesday Afternoon Update

By Jim Stefkovich, Meteorologist, Alabama Emergency Management Agency

CLANTON – Wednesday, 1:00 PM, July 16, 2025

A Heat Advisory continues until 7 pm across portions of western and northern Alabama.  Head Index values will range between 103-108.  Limit outdoor activity.  If outdoors, stay in shaded areas as much as possible, drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.  NEVER leave a child or pet in an unattended car, even for a couple of minutes.

At 1 pm, an area of low pressure was located near Panama City, moving westward and will reach the Louisiana coast on Thursday. There is still a question if the center can get far enough offshore to become a tropical depression before landfall on Thursday or just remains an area of low pressure.  There continues to be a 40% chance of development.

As of right now, the main threat to Alabama will be bands of heavy rainfall, with potentially a couple of wind gusts from 40-60 mph into this evening, especially south of a Livingston – Montgomery – Auburn line.  Localized flooding may occur.  With that said, many areas will still remain dry today.

After making landfall Thursday, the low pressure area will curve northward. This will still be close enough to Alabama to produce afternoon and evening scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms statewide from Friday through at least the weekend.

In addition, high temperatures in the middle 90s and high humidity will occur beginning on Monday and continuing next week.  Heat Advisories may be issued at some point for portions of the state.
