2025 talk
[edit]
We moved from 2024 to 2025, with new calendar pictures and new music. The topic of Bach's chorale cantatas will keep me busy until 25 March, and then I want to focus on performances more generally, in history and in my experience. You can follow my daily stories, {{User Gerda Arendt/Top}}, often with an image and something to listen to: let's stay inspired and connected. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:57, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Ongoing efforts regard locations that played a role in my life, recent deaths, music heard and sung, composers, gardens. Watch my user page for articles, done in collaboration. Compare 2024 for the amazing number of users who began and expanded articles. Thanks also to reviewers, and I do plan to review more and write less, and in writing, focus more on quality than the little daily article.
2025 calender pics and musical events begin here, and the 2025 diary of my own pictures of places, songs, food, flowers is here, - just watch those lists if you are interested.
My talk goes like this: on top there's the "story" related to the day. Below are three or more boxes, often one for people remembered and others for musical experiences, performing or listening. In these boxes, topics related to the top story and topics featured on the Main page appear bold. Right here you see the image of the month with songs of the month, typically related to friends who gave them to me, on their birthdays or when meeting them. I archive from time. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:25, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Your GA nomination of Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8
[edit]The article Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8 you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8 and Talk:Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8/GA1 for issues which need to be addressed. Message delivered by ChristieBot, on behalf of Aza24 -- Aza24 (talk) 00:24, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Aza24, thank you for the thorough review. I understand that in order to make Bach's chorale cantatas a good topic, this cantata - as part of it - has to be a good article, and I am willing to put work into it to make it so. However, right now I'm working simultaneously on several others with the same goal, and they require less work. I see me getting to serious changes for BWV 8 after the others, which will be in February. (The only one written later, BWV 1, is already a FA.) I'll make small changes now, perhaps today, but will then have to ask if the nom should remain open for longer or be closed and started over when I'm ready. Y'all: any help with this one and the others - making changes or reviewing - is welcome, see above, #calling for collaboration. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:06, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

Articles of people who recently died have been a focus from 2019. in 2025, they have been a daily topic, both on the Main page were Helmut Schlesinger appeared from 31 January until 5 January, but also in the daily little articles, with the one exception of a Sunday. Not all of them made it to Main page appearance, but were at least improved. Storye book is great in finding images, MONTENSEM in polishing composers' articles, Thriley in translating to begin articles for people with red links, Grimes2 all around helpful in finding and exploiting references, and several excellent in posting (just look belpw). 7 March 2025, Ravel’s 150th anniversary
[edit]Hi! I’ve seen you around a couple of times from some discussions that you have had with others and noticed that you love classical music! I’d thought that I would share with you my love for Maurice Ravel (my number one favorite composer for several years). I listened to several concerts this year dedicated to his 150th anniversary: pieces included La valse, Boléro, Introduction and Allegro, etc., all very wonderful pieces. Tfess up?or down? 01:01, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you. I thought of it and brought him to the main page at least by mentioning his name. I will write my story about one of his pieces, Trois Chansons (Ravel), created on 7 March 2019. (I had meant to use the Introduction and Allegro, in which I was involved a bit in 2011.) I want to create a new article on the occasion, Tout est lumière. Nice to meet you and your love! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:32, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Did you meet me in a discussion from Talk:Maurice Ravel/Archive 1? - My story:

I fondly remember ballet, opera and concert including an opera whose 100th birthday is coming up soon! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:54, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for responding! Trois Chansons? I’ll need to check that out, haha. And I’ve seen you around on user talk pages sharing some works of music, etc., so that was how I found out about you. Very sweet of you! (I was into Wikipedia editing for only 5-6 years so I’m a little bit of a newbie.) Tfess up?or down? 14:22, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Go ahead, check out. When I came across the Trois Chansons I was intrigued by his response to war: write something light, in your tradition, strengthening identity. I always list the articles I look at on my user page, - feel free to add and correct. - Below: almost too much of a good thing, a conductor and five other composers to be celeebrated ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:44, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

New hook for the Bach nom please? Or can anyone else who is reading this, suggest a hook? Thanks. Storye book (talk) 12:50, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
- My hooks are not wanted, see three of them on the current nom page. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:53, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
- That isn't true. Your hooks are wanted, but we have to change our hooks to accommodate others, as well as the predominant house style. It's difficult and hard to accept that, and believe me, if that wasn't true, I would write hooks in an altogether different way. I think that you have a good argument against the negativity bias that DYK promotes, but you will need to mount that defense. Viriditas (talk) 23:03, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
- Just to give you an example that I'm working on: I'm currently developing a new article about a painting by Jules Tavernier. For me, the most fascinating part of it is how it was made during balloon mania, and how the depiction of the high elevation view from the balloon fits into art history. Did other artists depict this view before him? How did balloon mania impact art in general? But you know what? Those questions aren't interesting to the DYK audience. What they want to know about is how Tavernier's first balloon trip, which led to this depiction in the second trip, crashed to the ground and injured people. Do you see how the negativity bias is at work here? Viriditas (talk) 01:10, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- No. I just see that I don't want to focus on a person's death, but accomplishments in life. Not on a crash but imagination. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:02, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- Today's response Nigel Osborne born OTD 1948 - it's not only DYK that's full of negative news, but OTD also, and but's much easier to change there, and feels like therapy. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:05, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

July music
[edit]I notice that you posted a newsletter on the talk page of Ritchie333 and other editors:
story · music · places Kafka's birthday again, 12 years after the one with the Google doodle. I admire the flowers for blooming although it looks dry. It took a week to get the composer of Mission: Impossible to the main page. The concert I listened to was remarkable, pic added to the performer. When I wrote her story yesterday, I thought of you, but was too tired to deliver ;) - Also a late nod to Erik Satie, - there was no room for him on Wikipedia's main page on the centenary of his death although I tried three times. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:53, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
Is there some central place where the points raised might be discussed?
In this case, the item about Satie caught my eye as he's a favourite of mine and I noticed that his centenary got some attention on the radio recently. It's bizarre that this wasn't included in OTD but that's no big deal and his birth was listed in May. And his article got an infobox this year so that's an achievement too, eh? I have some ideas for a follow-up; more anon...
Andrew🐉(talk) 22:22, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- Interesting that you'd think that's a newsletter ;) - There are some basics indeed, same to some friends (the "calendar" image, some reference to my daily stories), but if you look closer, only Ritchie (playing instruments the player also used for Satie) received that reference, and was also the only one to be bothered by my frustration about Satie. I had hoped that those who created the article would make it GA, for a DYK, but no, and next idea was to make Gymnopedies GA, but no, and then I thought the last chance was to mention him OTD, but no. Three missions impossible ;) - How about you make him GA, regardless of some date? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:42, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso, Léonide Massine, Jean Cocteau - Satie's article seemed to be missing a legacy section. I've made a start on that with some centenary events and there's a lot more material out there about his influence on modern music. If this turns into a sustained effort then further discussions belong at the article's talk page.
- If it passes a GA review then we can run the article at DYK. I already have a hook ready:
- Did you know that ... Erik Satie's collaborators (pictured) included Picasso, who changed his bed sheets?
- Andrew🐉(talk) 23:25, 3 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the ideas, Andrew. You may like the hook below then ;) - I said I was afraid something like that would happen, and it happened. (I should have said nothing.) You'll never get a four set of images to DYK, probably not even two. I picked mine. As for his infobox (a topic about which I try to say nothing): Just imagine the one there from 2010 had been kept. How many articles could have been written with all the effort invested in debates? Today is the birthday of Brian Boulton. He stood for compromise, see Percy Grainger, in 2013. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:44, 4 July 2025 (UTC)

Regarding hook interest
[edit]Gerda, you have to keep this in mind. The vast, vast, majority of our readers do not know much, if anything, about opera or classical music. You are an expert on it, but you have to understand that you are part of a relatively small minority. What seems like common or obvious knowledge to you is almost always unknown to the average reader. Most readers know nothing about famous opera houses, significant roles, important composers, and so on. Many may not even know famous musical pieces by name, even if they are familiar with their melodies. This is a point that 4meter4 has also mentioned in the past.
If you want your nominations to breeze through DYK, you need to put yourself in the shoes of someone who is not familiar with all the knowledge that you have. You need to propose hooks that are not too reliant on being an expert in opera or classical music to understand. You like to emphasize an opera performer's significant roles in hooks, but bear in mind that most readers have never even heard of these roles or operas before, let alone know why they are significant. Assuming that readers have the same background knowledge that you have is just not realistic.
This is the reasoning behind why, for DYK purposes, a hook about Klaus König's career as a house painter is a better fit than a hook about him playing Tannhauser. A regular reader would easily understand that an opera performer concurrently working in something unrelated to opera (in this case, house decorating) is unusual. On the other hand, the typical reader would not know why him performing as Tannhauser is such a big deal, let alone at the Royal Opera House or at La Scala. In fact, most readers may not even know either venue. It's also the reason even a hook mentioning that he played Tannhauser is not optimal: readers just won't get the significance. Given that you are a performer yourself and an expert in opera, you may take performing at such venues for granted, but the reality is that most just won't get it. It is like an American pop artist performing at Madison Square Garden, or a Japanese artist performing at the Budokan: it's a very big deal, but unless you know about how the music industry works, you wouldn't know it.
Gerda, I very much understand that these roles and venues are close to your heart, and I can see where you are coming from. My own DYK contributions primarily revolve another niche field (Japanese voice actors, musicians, and other anime-related stuff), so I can relate to your situation. However, DYK's interests emphasize the readers, not the editors. My advice for you is simply this: please do not overestimate the average person's knowledge of or familiarity with classical music and opera, and take that into account when proposing hooks. Editors like 4meter4 and CurryTime7-24 have been able to propose opera or classical music-related hooks are not reliant on deep knowledge or being an expert. You can read their past nominations and see how they word their hooks. I can assure you that, if you can do that, your nominations will easily pass reviews and your goal of bringing more attention to these performers and musical works will be more successful with our readers. Thank you and happy editing. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 13:01, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
- Another wall of text. Sorry, no time to read. I need to update a biography, behind for two days. I often wonder what Yoninah would have said. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:05, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
- All I ask you Gerda is to please not overestimate the average reader's knowledge of classical music and opera. Just understand that not everyone is as well-versed in those fields, so what may seem like common knowledge to you is often not. If you can do that, your nominations will be much more likely to breeze through DYK. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 13:08, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
- I just wrote at the otherend (aren't two discussions more than enough?) that we should not rely on people already knowing something but give them something to know that they did not know. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:14, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
- That isn't how DYK works. The guidelines say that hooks must be likely to be perceived as interesting or unusual by readers without specialist knowledge or backgrounds. Hooks that require someone to be an actual expert in classical music or opera to understand or appreciated (i.e. "specialist" hooks) go against that guideline and thus are more likely to be rejected. Yes, we want to educate readers and teach them something that they may not know, but we don't want to confuse or alienate them either. Reliance on contexts and backgrounds that that they may not know is only more likely to hamper that goal rather than help. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 13:23, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
- This discussion is over. I know that it isn't how DYK works, but as it should work, and as it worked when Yoninah was running it, always open for new facts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:26, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
- The problem is the qualification for DYK. New articles or 5 times expanded articles qualify. But these are not always DYK worthy. But I think DYK are rewards for making or expanding articles. So the attractiveness of DYK suffers. Grimes2 13:50, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
- I see it completely differently. I'm not interested in rewards, but making things known. Not that a person learned cello from age four (like thousands will, getting nowhere, how is that interesting?), but her very specific and precious achievements at age 29. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:59, 26 July 2025 (UTC)

Grüß dich Gerda! I only just came across this Foto of Graham by coincidence: File:Graham at the piano, Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett, Rüdesheim.jpg. Thank you so much. Now that really is precious. Danke!

I still think you don't get near enough thanks for how important the Precious award has been to encouraging new editors and instilling in them a sense of achievement and self-worth that helps them stay as editors. It certainly had a big effect on how long I stayed on the wiki. Much love, hope you've had a delightful summer so far.

- Ah, and since you like music I thought I'd recommend a few compositions I've been near-obsessed with this summer:

- Thank you, Ixtal, - love it! For my summer explore places (further up, under the flowers), - hope the same for you. I am number 3 or 4 among being thanked, - can't complain there, but wording like yours is more precious and uplifting! - All new music to me - thanks for sharing! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 26 July 2025 (UTC)
DYK for Klaus König
[edit]On 27 July 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Klaus König, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that operatic tenor Klaus König, who performed for more than 30 years, also worked as a house painter? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Klaus König. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Klaus König).
