Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Vietic *t-puːj (joyful). Cognate with Muong pui, Tho [Cuối Chăm] puːj¹ and Chut [Rục] təpuːj¹. Compare also Nghệ An/Hà Tĩnh dialects bui.

Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經, c. 12th cent.) as 𬐩, consisting of (MC si) + (MC pwoj) (modern SV: ti bôi). Attested as Northern Middle Vietnamese ꞗui (already undergone lenition) in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
