Extreme heat kills by pushing the human body beyond its limits. In extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Older adults, young children, and those who are sick or overweight are more likely to be severely affected by extreme heat.</p> <p>When authorities monitor extreme heat conditions the term &quot;heat index&quot; is used. This index measures the effects of heat and humidity. When heat and humidity combine to reduce the amount of evaporation of sweat from the body, outdoor exercise becomes dangerous even for those in good shape. In the District, the Heat Emergency Plan is activated when the heat index reaches 95 degrees.</p> <p>To&nbsp;learn more, visit&nbsp;<a data-content="http://heat.dc.gov/" data-type="external" href="http://heat.dc.gov/" target="_blank" title="heat.dc.gov">heat.dc.gov</a></p> <p>For a list of the District&#39;s cooling centers,&nbsp;<a href="https://dcgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=c975110d05a24acba55f65eef283e05b" target="_blank">click here</a>.&nbsp;</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-date-time-rep field-type-datetime field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Date and Time:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-single" property="dc:date" datatype="xsd:dateTime" content="2023-08-10T14:30:00-04:00">Thursday, August 10, 2023 - 2:30pm</span></div></div></div> Thu, 10 Aug 2023 18:36:40 +0000 tonyea.tharpe 1674941 at https://hsema.dc.gov https://hsema.dc.gov/event/extreme-heat#comments 1800 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE https://hsema.dc.gov/address/1800-martin-luther-king-jr-avenue-se </div><div class="field field-name-field-gis-address field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">GIS Address:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">1800 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SE</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-gis-city field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">City:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Washington</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-gis-state field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">State:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">DC</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-gis-zip field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Zip:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">20020</div></div></div> Wed, 16 Feb 2022 18:05:14 +0000 david.hudson 1582481 at https://hsema.dc.gov https://hsema.dc.gov/address/1800-martin-luther-king-jr-avenue-se#comments Bowser Administration Highlights Federal Assistance for COVID-19-Related Funeral Costs https://hsema.dc.gov/release/bowser-administration-highlights-federal-assistance-covid-19-related-funeral-costs-COVID <div class="field field-name-field-date field-type-date field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-single" property="dc:date" datatype="xsd:dateTime" content="2021-04-13T00:00:00-04:00">Tuesday, April 13, 2021</span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-sub-title field-type-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Funding Available Through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for Funeral Costs in COVID-19-Related Deaths</div></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><section id="section-content"> <p id="page-title">(Washington, DC) &ndash; The Bowser Administration is highlighting a new federal assistance program through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that provides financial assistance to individuals nationwide who incurred COVID-19-related funeral expenses after January 20, 2020.</p> <article about="/release/bowser-administration-highlights-federal-assistance-covid-19-related-funeral-costs" id="node-release-1532681" typeof="sioc:Item foaf:Document"> <p>Funding for the program comes through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
