Abstract
Hip disorders can be subdivided into pediatric and adult, soft tissue and bony, intra-articular and extra-articular and extended even further to include advanced intra-articular hip disorders. The acetabular labrum is a thin fibrocartilage ring surrounding the joint and functions to stabilize and seal the joint acting as a shock absorber by transferring forces away from the articular surfaces. Labral tears are the most common form of intra-articular hip pathology. Injuries to this structure result from acute or repetitive trauma, hypermobility, and dysplasia of the hip joint as well as underlying morphologic abnormalities of the femoral head or acetabulum. This chapter will focus specifically on the pathology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of adult hip labral tears of a pre-arthritic, intra-articular and soft tissue etiological nature. Discussion of other hip-related disorders including pediatric hip pathology are covered in other sections.
