A Case-Based Approach to Hip Pain

Abstract

Hip pain can have a variable presentation, and a thorough physical examination of the spine and sacroiliac joint is necessary to help tease out the etiology of the hip pain. Imaging and laboratory testing is often necessary. Once a diagnosis is made treatment can be escalated as needed from lifestyle changes to pharmacotherapy and can proceed to image-guided procedures that can provide therapeutic and diagnostic benefit. It is prudent to prioritize steroid-sparing interventions (which are catabolic) such as hyaluronic acid injections and hip radiofrequency ablation.
