Abstract
During the past four decades, radioactive materials have become increasingly common in industrial societies. Such materials are used for a variety of purposes and processes by the nuclear power industry, hospitals and medical institutions, the pharmaceutical industry, and research institutions, among others. Wastes from the use of these materials are proliferating and accumulating, and managing this waste has become a serious problem throughout most of the industrialized world.
