Abstract

In Canada, LLRW is defined as all radioactive wastes except for irradiated nuclear fuel from nuclear reactors and by-products of uranium mining and milling. LLRW also includes so-called “historic wastes,” originating from earlier activities, primarily involving the radium industry, that are managed in a manner no longer considered acceptable and for which the original producer cannot be reasonably held responsible (Morrison & Brown, 1991).
