Abstract

This chapter focuses on leadership effectiveness in Egypt, a topic especially important for individuals and organizations who are interested in understanding and doing business in the most populated country in North Africa, and the third most populated in Africa. The chapter provides a brief history and current events in Egypt. The major focus is on culture, leadership, and motivation to provide a context for effective leadership in Egypt. The chapter presents the results of a qualitative study that examines culture, leadership and motivation. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of educational background and experience in leadership effectiveness. Moreover, results suggest the importance of the honesty and fairness in the leaders’ role and their support to subordinates. A majority of participants also believed that feeling important and being appreciated motivates people, therefore managers should think of enhancing employee empowerment. Finally, comments of business professionals, both foreigners and locals on issues associated with leadership are also presented. These findings add value to the management and leadership fields for academics, executives, and the community, in general.

If his heart rules him, his conscience will soon take the place of the rod. (Egyptian Proverb)
