Advocacy / Policy Statements
On occasion, the MMA will develop policy statements on certain high profile issues in health care. These statements go through a rigorous process, including the development of an ad hoc committee of members to develop the statements, and are ultimately approved by the Board of Directors. These are then used in our advocacy efforts to advance the mission of the MMA.
The MMA believes that our current U.S. health care system produces some of the world’s most eminent clinicians and health care facilities which, together, provide some of the most advanced medical care in the world. But, despite sustained efforts by physicians and other health care workers, our system fails both patients and physicians in multiple ways.
Since legislation was introduced before the 128th Maine Legislature (2017-2018), the Maine Medical Association (MMA) has been re-evaluating its position in opposition to physician-assisted suicide (also referred to as physician-assisted death) established by a 2001 resolution of its membership.
