]]>Co-presented by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Wheelchair Games will bring together 537 Veteran athletes from across the United States to compete in 23 adaptive sports events, including 11 Paralympic competitions in Minneapolis, Minn., from July 17 – 22, 2025.
Originally from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Lopez joined the Adaptive Sports Program after moving back home in 2018. Suffering from a traumatic brain injury and the loss of his right leg below the knee due to a car accident during his military service, he faced challenges adjusting back to civilian life.
When he first joined the program, he was notably shy and withdrawn. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was invited to participate in the Adaptive Cycling clinic. The clinic not only provided him with an avenue to stay physically active, but it also introduced him to a supportive community. With the unwavering support of his wife and son—who accompany him on the nearly two-hour drive to the training site—Lopez has embraced this new chapter with enthusiasm and commitment. His training has rekindled his aspirations, with a goal to continuously improve in cycling and potentially become a Paralympic athlete.
At this year’s National Veterans Wheelchair Games, Lopez will showcase his newfound skills and determination across multiple events: Air Pistol, Air Rifle, Cornhole, Handcycling and Field sports, including Discus, Shot Put and Javelin.
Lopez’s wife has observed a significant positive shift in his mental health since he began training for the games. His has transformed from a quiet and introverted individual to someone who has developed social connections, and how he shows maturity and dedication is a testament to the profound impact of adaptive sports. His participation has not only reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, but also inspired him to face challenges with a positive attitude.
Lopez’s journey from isolation to empowerment is an inspiration to many other Veterans facing similar challenges. With his positive outlook and dedication, he continues to embody strength and perseverance, proving that with the right support, every challenge can be turned into an opportunity for growth and accomplishment.
Stay tuned as Lopez competes in and inspires at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games!
]]>Veterans are encouraged to be extra diligent as they provide personal information through registries. Visit this VA News article to learn more about common scams targeting Veterans with high VA benefits, along with Purple Heart recipients and their dependents.
When we speak about America’s Purple Heart recipients, the phrase “Some gave all. All gave some,” is often used. Few understand the true meaning of these six simple words like our nation’s Purple Heart recipients.
From the fields of Lexington and Concord to the trenches of Europe, and the jungles of Vietnam to the sands of the Middle East, courageous Americans have answered the call of their country to serve a cause greater than themselves for nearly 250 years. For their physical scars and wounds, these great Americans have received a singular recognition, first conceived by the father of our nation, George Washington in 1782.
Over 1.8 million Americans have been awarded the Purple Heart, which traces its roots to the Badge of Military Merit. Behind each Purple Heart is a unique American story of valor. Unfortunately, there is no publicly available database of all those who have been wounded or killed in action while protecting the freedoms we cherish. The 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center further complicated accurate accounting for those who earned this recognition that no one wants but is granted as a tribute from a grateful nation.
Together, we can change that. The National Purple Heart Honor Mission is ramping up efforts to enroll our nation’s Purple Heart Heroes into the Roll of Honor, a publicly accessible, online catalogue of our heroes managed by the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New York.
The idea behind the Roll of Honor is simple: Record as many stories of valor as possible from those who have served and sacrificed for our freedom and their families to inspire future generations of Americans to greatness.
Inclusion in the Roll of Honor is open to all Purple Heart recipients, regardless of branch or time of service. Family members can also create profiles for their loved ones. To be enrolled, one simply completes the registration form, including providing the relevant award documentation (DD-214 or DD-215, Purple Heart Certificate, General or Permanent Orders listing the Award, or a WD-AGO 53-550). Applicants to the roll are also encouraged to provide a photo to be associated with their profile.
Since its creation, more than 200,000 entries have been added to the Roll of Honor. But we have a long way to go. As a publicly available catalogue of Purple Heart recipients and their stories, the Roll of Honor helps all of us draw inspiration from our Purple Heart recipients. Their stories offer us an opportunity to unite behind the courage and fortitude that make our nation, and its armed forces, the best in the world.
The Purple Heart is worn humbly and proudly by so many, not because it is a symbol of their own sacrifice but a testament to those who did not make it home. It reminds us that freedom isn’t free.
Our Purple Heart recipients are deserving of our gratitude and our commitment to honor their service and sacrifice. By working together, we can ensure those who have sacrificed for our freedom receive the recognition they deserve.

]]>Before separating from the Marine Corps, Chris Earl started building the foundation for what became the country’s largest military gaming community: Regiment Gaming. The former logistics and embarkation specialist has been gaming since he was around 4 years old and playing competitively since 11.
Today, Earl’s mission is to build community and camaraderie through gaming, all in an effort to prevent suicide among Veterans. Advocates and health care providers increasingly acknowledge the mental health benefits of gaming for Veterans.
But in addition to benefiting from the medium, Veterans like Earl are helping to shape the gaming industry as innovators and business founders. And like Earl, they’re taking advantage of DAV Patriot Boot Camp’s no-cost programming for entrepreneurs in the military and Veteran community.
Founded in 2012, DAV Patriot Boot Camp connects transitioning service members, Veterans and military spouses with invaluable education, world-class mentorship and a supportive community to help them succeed as founders.
Applications for the next DAV Patriot Boot Camp, to be held Oct. 15-17 near Cincinnati, Ohio, can be found at patriotbootcamp.org. Applications will close when all seats are full or by Sept. 15, whichever comes first. Participants will get the chance to compete in a pitch contest with $10,000 in no-obligation funding up for grabs.
Branden Duncan served four years in the Air Force, working in electronic warfare control systems, before earning a degree in electrical engineering.
All those experiences uniquely prepared him to create Hedgehog, a gaming mouse with customizable knuckle and finger buttons that also operates as a flat-plane joystick. While Duncan said the gaming device market is saturated, there’s really nothing like what he’s designed.
Duncan attended DAV Patriot Boot Camp in 2022 and credits its experts and mentors with steering him in the right direction to pursue funding. It helped him get to where he is today, and he hopes to attend a future cohort when he’s ready to take Hedgehog to the next stage.
“Earl and Duncan illustrate the value of Veterans as business founders and the positive impact they can have on an industry,” said DAV National Adjutant and CEO Barry Jesinoski. “DAV Patriot Boot Camp is honored to support them on their journeys. When Veterans succeed, it benefits more Veterans and entire communities.”

Quad Cities is located on the Iowa-Illinois border along the Mississippi River, and despite its name, the region includes five main cities: Rock Island, Moline and East Moline in Illinois; and Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa. This event—organized and sponsored by the Quad Cities Community Veterans Engagement Board (CVEB)—drew 415 Veterans from across the region and beyond. VA came out in force to support this event with health care staff from VA Iowa City Health Care System, benefit experts from VA’s Chicago and Des Moines Regional Offices, Quad Cities Vet Center and the Veterans Experience Office.
Founded in 2018 by the Unity Point-Trinity Military Advisory Committee, the CVEB was established to ensure no Veteran in the Quad Cities area falls through the cracks. Over the years, this dedication has evolved into a trusted community initiative, making Veteran outreach a core focus of its efforts.
Many past attendees have gone on to become volunteers, then board members, embodying the event’s success story: turning gratitude into action, and action into lasting change for fellow Veterans.
The event offered a full spectrum of services, including:
A highlight of the event was the presence of VA’s Medical Disability Examination Office (MDEO) with two Mobile Medical Units (MMUs), conducting 66 Compensation and Pension (C&P) exams onsite. By having this addition, staff were able to review Veterans’ VA disability claims on the spot, order exams and immediately send Veterans to the mobile units the same day.
While every Veteran’s journey is meaningful, here are three stories that exemplify the impact of this event.
As a National Guard Veteran, Tiffany struggled to get her VA benefits on her own. She attended this same event in 2023 where she worked with VBA staff to file her disability claim, and spent the following year attending medical examinations and submitting additional evidence. She was later awarded a total 70% service connection rate, was awarded a $24,000 retroactive payment and ongoing monthly benefits.
Tiffany came back to the 2025 event and learned more about her lifetime VA health care. She signed up on the spot, scheduled her first exams, and staff showed her how to access her benefits through MyHealtheVet. She was excited to learn about the wide range of women’s health care services at VA.
Accompanied by family caretakers, Tiffany was thrilled to discover resources for her advanced medical condition. She also filed an additional claim and checked on her appeal before leaving, gaining the support and information she needed to move forward.
A Vietnam Veteran filed his first VA claim after over 50 years since leaving service. Attending as a proud grandfather, he wanted his deploying soldier grandson to know there’s a community ready to support him—something he lacked after Vietnam.
As he proudly talked about his grandson, he revealed his extensive Vietnam engineering service and medical struggles over the years, unaware that VA could help him, too. By finally applying, he’s now able to access the benefits he earned to improve his well-being. His story highlights how taking that first step can change lives after decades of silence.
Having previously filed a claim at this event in 2023, resulting in an overall VA service connection of 90% and an $13,700 retroactive check, one Veteran returned in 2025 to file additional contentions. During a review of his records, staff identified a clear and unmistakable error regarding his filing date. Immediate adjudication resulted in a backpay of $6,100. Additionally, he completed on-site exams for his new claim, which will help expedite the processing and ensure a quicker resolution of his benefits— a game-changer for his peace of mind and financial stability.
The success of this event, along with previous outreach in the Quad Cities, highlights the impact of dedicated community effort, Veteran trust and comprehensive support. Whether first-time claim filers or long-time VA participants, attendees leave with renewed hope, healing and meaningful progress.
As the Quad Cities continue to honor its Veterans, the CVEB’s commitment remains unwavering: ensuring no Veteran is left behind, and every story of service is met with the respect and support it deserves.

In the wake of natural disasters like tornados and flooding and earthquakes and fires and hurricanes, it’s important for Veterans and their families to know that VA is here to help. Here are some of the resources available to you.
Free, confidential support is available 24/7 for Veterans in crisis by phone, text, or chat:
If you or a Veteran you know needs immediate housing assistance in the aftermath of a natural disaster, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans, available 24/7: 1-877-4AID VETS (1-877-424-3838).
If you’ve relocated to a shelter or a disaster recovery center because of a natural disaster, we may have already deployed a team to connect you with the health care and benefits you need. If you need help finding housing, we’ll assign you to a case manager.
Learn more about disaster recovery centers on the FEMA website
If you have a VA loan and your home was affected by a natural disaster, please review the VA Guidance on Natural Disasters (PDF, 2 pages, 130KB).
Reach us with any VA related questions or for information at:
If you’re enrolled in VA health care and a disaster has impacted you, we may already be in contact with you to learn how we can support you. If we haven’t contacted you, call your nearest VA medical center to speak with the patient advocate team.
If you’re affected by a natural disaster, we may offer instant loan approvals online or provide same-day processing for policy loans.
We also provide same-day processing and approval for these:
The Office of Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (OSGLI) follows disaster alerts issued by each state’s Department of Insurance in the event of a natural disaster. These alerts generally pause insurance coverage from lapsing for people in affected areas and extend the grace period for premium payments.
To learn more, call us at 800-669-8477. We’re here from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET.
To contact OSGLI, call us at 800-419-1473. We’re here from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET. Or, you can email us at [email protected].
Some predators use natural disasters and emergencies to target Veterans. This may include disaster response imposters and scammers claiming they’re from charities offering fake emergency loans.
If you think you may be a victim of fraud, call us at 833-388-7233. We’re here 24/7.
VA’s Office of Emergency Management drives a comprehensive emergency management program at all VA facilities to ensure continuity of benefits and health care for Veterans. While we shared quite a few resources above, it is important to work with your local VA teams so they can fully support you following a natural disaster.

]]>Veterans need peer support—someone who’s been there, gets it and can help. After leaving the military, many Veterans face loneliness and isolation. The camaraderie and sense of purpose of service can slip away, leaving a quiet gap that’s tough to fill.
Since 2011, Vets4Warriors has offered free, confidential peer support—24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. The Vets4Warriors team, mostly Veterans themselves, understands because they’ve lived it. They’ve connected with hundreds of thousands from the military community, including more than 8,400 people who reached out for the first time just this past year. Since starting, Vets4Warriors has had over 955,000 contacts.
Veterans can reach Vets4Warriors anytime at 1-855-838-8255. Calls are answered live in less than 30 seconds, ensuring that no one must wait in a moment of need. Support is available for Veterans of all ages and eras, including support for active duty members, National Guard, reservists and their families. Whether it’s a quick check-in or a longer talk, Vets4Warriors is ready to listen, stay with you, follow up and connect you to the right resources—from mental health guidance to job support or community programs that meet your needs. That early connection can keep problems and loneliness from turning into something bigger.
Vets4Warriors, housed at the Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care National Call Center, is a one-of-a-kind, 24/7 peer support network. Callers can be assured that everything they share with Vets4Warriors staff will always remain 100% confidential.
The program complements other resources available to service members, Veterans, family members and caregivers, but remains separate from them. This allows Vets4Warriors to ensure that our callers have every confidence that we work with them to identify the best available resource, no matter what their needs may be.
If you want to speak with a peer, call Vets4Warriors at 1-855-838-8255, or chat online. Peer support staff are standing by 24/7, 365 days a year.
]]>If you’re a Veteran in crisis or concerned about one, contact the Veterans Crisis Line to receive 24/7 confidential support. You don’t have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care to connect. To reach responders, Dial 988 then Press 1, chat online at VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat, or text 838255.
Blue Star Support Circles: Upstream Solutions to Crisis has reached many caregivers, Veterans, military members and their supporters in our effort to end Veteran suicide. Through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Program, our innovative approach equips those best positioned to intervene before a crisis occurs. VA News featured this program earlier this year, from the perspective of a Veteran Spouse. This story focuses on Dr. Thomas Brodar, a Veteran, physician and prior American Legion Commander from Indiana.
Brodar participated in Blue Star Support Circles in 2024 as a way to support his fellow Veterans. He comes from a long line of Veterans stretching back to his grandfather in World War I. He served in the Army during Vietnam and even used his G.I. Bill benefits to become a physician. He wanted to pair his health care experience and love for the community to become a better frontline advocate and supporter.
“Knowing that there was a need to help my fellow Veterans in their time of suicidal depression was my call to arms,” said Brodar. “This training helped me feel confident – to be the first line of defense. This showed me the way to find help for Veterans.” Research on the program shows that the training not only builds confidence but also shifts how participants view suicide, reinforcing their belief that they can make a meaningful difference.
“Being in a rural environment and having an educational opportunity was heartwarming and made me feel more connected and involved,” said Brodar, who liked how easy it was to sign up and to access anywhere, a core component of the Blue Star Support Circles program.
Brodar appreciated the breadth of information from the Blue Star Families team and community presenters. He could tell that the information, presentations and experts were all passionate about the same mission of preventing Veteran suicide.
He also appreciated the program’s “Lethal Means Safety” component, which offers free medicine safes, gun locks and firearms safes for participants. Blue Star Support Circles distributes these as a way of providing a barrier to lethal means for any person at risk, and has given out more than 216 locks and safes to date.
When asked if the Blue Star Support Circles program has helped him professionally or personally, Brodar enthusiastically shared his experience. “This training has raised my level of awareness and confirmed my position as a grassroots mental health first responder in my local community. This is so vital for a rural community because our resources are so limited. We have to help each other because there is no one else coming to our rescue. We have to be able to identify the problem, and then we have to know how to immediately assist.”
Blue Star Families is thankful for Veterans and advocates like Brodar who wants to use this program and help prevent a crisis before it occurs.

]]>The votes are in and the winner of the 2025 Veterans Day Poster Contest is Jeremy D. Carpenter, whose creation “Unified by Service” reflects the 2025 Veterans Day theme “Service to Our Nation” by visually uniting all uniformed services under one flag and one purpose.
Carpenter is an Army Veteran living in Lowell, Arkansas, with his wife and son. Though not a professional artist, he turns to creative outlets like design, music and writing when inspiration strikes. For him, art is a way to reflect on experiences, express emotion and share meaning with others. He is grateful for the opportunity to contribute in this small way and hopes that his work can speak to others in ways that matter to them.
“Unified by Service” is “formal, structured and patriotic. It pays tribute to all Veterans regardless of when or where they served, and it emphasizes that service to the nation is not confined to one uniform, one battlefield or one generation. The eagle, flag, and seals work together to portray unity, honor and a continued commitment to freedom.”
The Veterans Day poster will be displayed in VA facilities, military installations and municipal buildings across America. It will also serve as the cover of the official program for the Veterans Day commemoration at Arlington National Cemetery on November 11.
Thank you to all who used their creativity to show appreciation for our Veterans. We welcome you to enter the 2026 Veterans Day competition and we look forward to seeing your future artistic creations.

Type “franchise” into an internet search and you will get a ton of information, often in the wrong order and from sources you don’t know if you can trust. Even a list of “best” franchises might not suite your unique skills.
The right match, like a well-fitting suit or a dress, is a custom fit process. It’s a combination of science and experience based on six factors:
Finding your Vetrepreneur Franchise Type is the first step.
After some initial matches are found, Veterans need a process to validate the match. This due diligence process includes conversations with the franchisor, a review of the franchise disclosure document, talking with existing franchise owners, considering a legal review of the franchise agreement and determining the optimal way to finance the business.
The Vetrepreneur Franchise Coaching service uses a 10-step, 10-week process that enables them to make an informed decision on whether franchising is right for them and finding the best franchise match. These coaches are all Veterans or Veteran spouses with tremendous business and franchise experience.
There is limited capacity. Veterans may apply now for the free Vetrepreneur Franchise Coaching service.
]]>If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to find the right support services as a Veteran, you’re not alone. From housing needs to employment and mental health resources, knowing where to start or how to apply can feel like a full-time job. That’s where PATRIOTlink, an open-access resource database from Code of Support Foundation comes in. And now, it’s better than ever.
PATRIOTlink has launched a new pilot program designed to make resource navigation easier for Veterans and military families searching for assistance. This update introduces a referral feature, built specifically for partner case managers, but with major benefits for Veterans:
Additionally, PATRIOTlink now connects directly with VA through a secure application programming interface (API), which allows eligible users to upload their information to their platform account. If you’re a Title 38 Veteran, you can securely reference your VA profile when applying for support services on the platform, making verification more efficient.
So far, 21 nonprofit organizations have joined the pilot program. These include groups that specialize in mental health, employment, education support, recreational programs, service animals, caregiver support and more. All of these programs are ready to support Veterans.
By using PATRIOTlink’s referral feature and VA API, partners are equipped to do this work on your behalf even more effectively and efficiently.
There are over 45,000 Veteran support organizations across the U.S., but navigating the entire system of resources can be incredibly difficult. PATRIOTlink is working to bring them all together into one easy-to-use, accessible platform for you and your family.
Since 2016, PATRIOTlink.org has been connecting Veterans and their families to vetted, free or low-cost programs nationwide. Whether you’re transitioning out of service, in need of support, or helping a fellow Veteran find resources, these updates will provide you with the ease of use and peace of mind you’ve been searching for. Visit patriotlink.org to get started today.

Soldiers To Sidelines (STS) is a nonprofit that trains Veterans to become coaches. We offer free virtual and in-person clinics, mentorship and networking opportunities. Through football, basketball, soccer and beyond, Veterans find a new way to serve—this time, on the field.
Coaching offers more than a career path. It gives purpose. It builds community. It restores the sense of team that many Veterans miss after service.
Every Veteran who joins our team brings something powerful. They know how to lead under pressure. They know how to put others first. Coaching allows them to continue shaping lives.
Veteran coaches from STS have gone on to work at every level—from youth sports to the NFL. Others coach in their hometowns, making a difference close to home. All carry the same mission: to serve again.
Our programs are open to all Veterans, service members and military spouses. No coaching experience is necessary. Just bring your commitment to lead and a desire to make an impact.
Registration is now open for our Annual Coaching Summit! This free event brings together Veteran coaches, pro-level mentors and leadership experts from across the country. It’s a chance to connect, grow and get inspired alongside fellow service-driven leaders. Whether you’re new to coaching or already on the sidelines, the Summit is your next step forward.
Coaching changes lives—especially the life of the coach. For Veterans looking for their next mission, it may start with a whistle and a team that needs them.
]]>Leaving military service isn’t just a career change—it’s a life transformation. Many Veterans face this shift without a clear path forward, struggling to answer a critical question: Who am I now?
The Vector Accelerator, a new free online program from The Honor Foundation (THF), was built to help Veterans answer that question—and much more.
Available to all active duty service members and Veterans, Vector Accelerator offers a powerful first step in the transition journey. Through short, guided modules completed at your own pace, the program helps participants reflect on who they are, what drives them and what a meaningful future could look like after service.
Developed by THF—a national nonprofit with over a decade of experience supporting elite military talent—Vector brings that same proven approach to every Veteran, regardless of rank, branch or separation date. It’s free, fully virtual and built around science-backed tools that work.
Most transition programs focus on what to do next. Vector helps you figure out why. By digging into your story and understanding what drives you, you’ll be better prepared to make choices that lead to long-term fulfillment—not just your next job.
Vector Accelerator is now accepting participants from across the Veteran community.
By redefining the transition experience, Vector Accelerator is ensuring that all Veterans—not just those in specialized military communities—have access to the tools they need to transition with purpose. Through this pioneering initiative, The Honor Foundation is fulfilling its commitment to empower those who have served our nation, helping them forge meaningful futures beyond their time in uniform.

]]>This May, runners in Team Red White and Blue’s (RWB) Old Glory Ultra Relay made history by setting a world record—carrying a single American flag nonstop across the entire continental United States in just over 16 days. Twelve dedicated Veterans, divided into three teams—Red, White and Blue—ran with relentless determination, covering over 3,000 miles at an average pace of 7 minutes, 43 seconds per mile. Each team of four took turns relaying the flag, pushing through grueling weather and over 119,162 elevation changes from the USS Midway Museum in San Diego to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Supported by a crew of medical, mechanical and logistical staff, these heroes exemplified resilience, teamwork and unwavering commitment. As proud military Veterans and members of Team RWB, their journey not only shattered records but also aimed to raise $1 million for Veteran health and wellness—demonstrating that through perseverance and purpose, we can inspire change and honor those who served.
Lindsay Kasow, one of two women in the relay, is a current Rating Veteran Service Representative (RVSR) from the San Diego Regional Office (RO) with the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA). She is a proud Marine Corps Veteran who served her country for nine years in various military police roles in the U.S., Okinawa and the Philippines.
At the end of her military service, Kasow completed the Warrior Training Advancement Course (WARTAC). WARTAC is a skill-bridge education and employment opportunity for Wounded Warriors and transitioning service members to complete a national-level VBA training program while still on active duty. Calling it, “The best thing ever,” Kasow finished her training to become a VSR while stationed at Camp Pendelton and got her wish-list assignment at the San Diego RO, where she still works today.
Kasow says she started running to stay competitive after active duty. A friend was running 50-mile races, and she thought, “I could do that too.” That slowly grew to 100-mile races, and last year she completed seven ultra marathons, even standing on the podium a few times.
This year she was selected to run “the Badwater,” also known as the “World’s Toughest Footrace.” The course traverses 135 miles in California in 48 hours or less, all in extreme heat. The race kicks off in the lowest elevation in North America at the Badwater Basin in Death Valley and finishes at Whitney Portal in the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States. Runners go through a rigorous selection process and the race is by invitation only.
A friend saw an advertisement for the Old Glory Ultra and sent it to Kasow. She applied, was interviewed where she discussed the great lengths and terrain she has ran and was ecstatic to be selected. Joining the race brought her into Team RWB and introduced her to teammates who became family. She was assigned to the White team, the “night runners.” They hit the road each night from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
The Old Glory Ultra runners are still in daily contact, and she says she is constantly chatting with Team White. Like the military, the unique experience bonded them in a way no one will ever know. This mission was rooted in far more than securing a world record but bringing a voice to Veteran health and wellness.
Kasow is humble, constantly moving the discussion away from personal accomplishments and back to the team and the mission.
“We did great because we had the best support system. From the sponsors, the people taking care of our health, to the entire team,” she said. “We ran great because of them.”
She also shared how much the community support meant to her and the team. She talked about the first time they got a police escort in Texas, to every hero salute they received from every fire station they passed. The Red and Blue teams were the day runners and saw larger ceremonies, but she teared up as she recalled running in one of her last shifts.
They were running through Virginia past a fire station, and she saw a lady standing farther on by herself, waving a little American flag and screaming for her. They shared a high five and it made her realize this relay not only touched the hearts of the runners, but the hearts of everyone who came out to support.
Secretary of VA Doug Collins was at the finish line to commend the runners and support Team RWB’s mission of building a healthy lifestyle for Veterans.
“Your running across America shows Veterans they are valuable,” he said. “Many Veterans leave service and forget how great they are. Staying healthy—walking, running, lifting—makes America better.”
Kasow is a testament to the missions of VA and Team RWB, not only as Veteran, but as someone who is running to bring awareness and working at VA. As a service rep at VA, she meticulously reviews records to ensure each Veteran she serves gets the compensation and benefits they earned. The work has broadened her perspective Veterans face, from combat injuries and physical ailments to silent mental health battles and emotional hardships. Just like her ultra races, Kasow takes the “extra step” with each claim. When she isn’t running or working, you will find her outside with good friends and her animals.
Kasow will be featured in an upcoming Veteran 30-Day Fitness Challenge. VA and Team RWB are teaming up later this year to give Veterans a new mission.
]]>Bridge My Return (BMR) has simplified the job search and hiring process for the military community—for the jobseeker and the talent seeker.
By leveraging AI and a proprietary algorithm, military jobseekers are matched to specific “live” jobs that fit them—with employers who get them (because they have all been vetted for their “military readiness.”)
A MOS translator captures their military skills. The software translates military skills into civilian skills. And the proprietary algorithm matches Veterans to jobs.
What’s required of the jobseeker? A completed BMR profile—a 20-minute investment. From there, the software works 24/7; members see new matches as new employers and jobs are added to the platform.
The application also automatically produces a professional resume from the completed profile. And candidates can apply to a matched job that interests them with a single click. All at no cost.
For employers, the software delivers quality matches, instantly. The user experience and interface provide for the automation of job importation, a sleek dashboard to manage activities, applicant tracking system integration and a standardized candidate resume.
It’s no longer enough to call Veterans heroes; it’s time to look at them as assets. It’s no longer enough to thank them for their service; it’s time to hire them for their talents. It’s time for a tech-first, user-centric approach that tackles Veteran underemployment.
Members of the military community—including spouses and caregivers—can get started today. Employers interested in hiring military talent can contact BMR.

Across the country, Veterans are sharing how the VA Health and Benefits app is making a real difference in their lives.
“It’s great to know I can message my provider and get quick answers. I recently asked my primary care team about a medication, and I had a response by the end of the day.” Stephen Havard, Marine Corps Veteran from Texas
“While sitting in my deer blind, I realized I was low on one of my prescriptions. I opened the app and ordered a refill in just a few taps.” Luke Yanny, Marine Veteran from Wisconsin
“Lovely format, very user friendly and updated regularly. Recommend using this app instead of the actual site. Keep up the good work developers :)” Anonymous Veteran Reviewer on Google Play Store
“The VA Mobile App is a great tool for Veterans… I use it almost daily… Excellent idea, VA… Great job!” Nealy Marine, Veteran from Alabama
The app is designed to simplify everyday tasks, making VA services more accessible than ever before.

]]>Last year, Blue Star Families invited all Veteran families to take the Military Family Lifestyle Survey (MFLS) to give you a direct say in improving the lives of military and Veteran families. This year, you’re invited again to participate in driving real change for families like yours.
Blue Star Families is continuously seeking ways to address the issues that military and Veteran families face. Its annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey is an essential part of the work to understanding the challenges unique to military and Veteran families.
Veterans, your experiences are shaping the future of military family support. The Military Family Lifestyle Survey is the largest and most comprehensive survey of its kind, with over 107,000 responses worldwide. Your participation directly influences policy changes that impact our community and directly affects policies set forth in the National Defense Authorization Act.
In the 2025 (NDAA), your input led to significant improvements:
These advancements are a direct result of your feedback. By taking part in the 2025 MFLS, you continue to shape policies that improve the quality of life for military families. Your experiences and insights are invaluable in driving meaningful change
Your feedback in the Military Family Lifestyle Survey has already directly influenced policy changes that support military families. In 2024, VA became the first federal agency to adopt the 4+1 Commitment, a collaborative initiative by Blue Star Families, Hiring Our Heroes and the Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership. This commitment encourages employers to implement policies that enhance employment opportunities for military spouses. VA’s adoption of all four key policies—facilitating job transferability, offering remote or telework options, providing flexible work hours and granting paid or permissive Permanent Change of Station leave—demonstrates a significant step toward addressing employment challenges faced by military spouses.
While progress has been made, the journey isn’t over. Continued participation in surveys like MFLS and open forums ensures that your concerns remain at the forefront of policy discussions. Your voice is a catalyst for change, driving initiatives that aim to improve the quality of life for all Veteran families. Take this year’s survey and help continue to drive change.
After completing the survey, watch for the 2026 results release event early next year.

]]>Veterans in north Texas have a new gaming facility to help them build camaraderie and boost their mental health.
Phil Miller VFW Post 2205 in Denton, Texas, recently unveiled a groundbreaking esports suite designed to support the mental health and well-being of local Veterans. This unique facility is the culmination of a two-and-a-half-year journey initiated by a response to a 2022 Department of Defense study that identified online gaming as one of the most effective activities to reduce suicide risk among service members.
Inspired by these findings, Post 2205 members—many of whom are Vietnam Veterans—voted to create the esports suite. Over the next two years, they led a campaign to raise funds and awareness, with community volunteers contributing to the transformation of the site.
Recognizing the importance of community, the Post leaders partnered with Christopher Earl, CEO of Regiment, the largest online gaming community for Veterans with more than 100,000 Discord members. Earl’s involvement significantly accelerated the project’s progress. To ensure high-performance gaming experiences, Arpit Manaktala, CEO of Paradox Customs, was brought in to design the gaming PCs, and Dylan Wray, esports Director at the University of North Texas, reviewed the system specs.
The suite features noise-canceling insulation and integrated wiring, creating an immersive environment. It serves as a digital sanctuary where Veterans can engage in shared gaming experiences, combat isolation and find a sense of purpose.
Looking ahead, the suite plans to expand into virtual reality (VR), a technology already used by the military for training in high-pressure situations. VR could be an invaluable tool in helping service members transition back to civilian life.
The grand opening was attended by several elected officials, including Senator Ted Cruz, Representative Andy Hopper, Representative Ronny Jackson, Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth, Councilmember Brian Beck, and Lynn Rolf of Combat Tested Gaming, the VFW’s official online gaming initiative.
The launch of the esports suite marks a significant advancement for VFW and the Denton community, blending cutting-edge technology with a profound commitment to Veteran mental health. Phil Miller Post 2205 now stands as a national model for how innovation and community spirit can unite to support those who have served.
