Clashes renew in Syria’s Suwayda, armed groups capture soldiers
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Violent clashes resumed on Monday in the western countryside of Suwayda, southern Syria, between local armed factions from Suwayda and Bedouin tribal groups from neighboring Daraa Governorate.
The escalation included drone attacks and ground assaults on several villages in the area.
Field sources from the village of Thaala told North Press that villages in the western countryside of Suwayda were under attack from multiple directions by armed groups utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The intensity of the clashes has resulted in an undetermined number of casualties.
While no official death toll has been confirmed, the Syrian Ministry of Defense reported that over 30 individuals were killed and at least 100 others injured during the fighting over the past two days.
Tensions remain high, though a cautious calm has settled over the al-Muqawwas neighborhood, eastern Suwayda city. Negotiations are reportedly ongoing in hopes of exchanging captives and reaching a ceasefire to prevent further bloodshed.
In a related development, the Syrian Ministry of Defense’s Media and Communications Department stated that a group of Syrian army personnel was assaulted while attempting to de-escalate the clashes in the Thaala village.
The department said that the soldiers were captured and subjected to torture by what the ministry described as “outlawed groups.” Video footage circulating online appears to confirm the mistreatment.
