How can I submit my research dataset along with an Elsevier article?

Mendeley Data is an open, free-to-use research data repository, which enables researchers to make their research data publicly available. There are currently different methods for authors to submit data with their article.

A dataset is the term we use for a collection of research data files produced in the course of research for a paper or project, and accompanying descriptive metadata (title, description, contributors etc).

How

Many Elsevier journals now offer authors the ability to submit research data as part of the article submission process, and research datasets submitted in this way will be stored and independently available on Mendeley Data, linked to/from your published article. The Guide for Authors for the journal you are planning to submit to will indicate if this is available.

Follow these steps to check the availability for your journal:

  1. Use the search function on ScienceDirect to locate your chosen publication, by entering the title in the 'In this journal or book title' field and clicking 'Search'.
    • Click on the image of the journal to go to the journal homepage.
  2. Click on ‘Guide for Authors’ in the right-hand side section of the menu ribbon on the journal page.

Follow these steps to upload your dataset directly to Mendeley Data:

  1. Sign in or register to Mendeley Data.
  2. Click ‘New dataset’.
  3. Upload data files. There is a limit of 10GB per dataset.
  4. Add metadata (including Title, Description and Contributors) for the dataset.
  5. Click ‘Save’.

Please note: Do not click ‘Publish’ yet as this would make the data publicly available.

After uploading your dataset:

  • Depending on the journal policy, your data may not be reviewed, however it will be available to reviewers.
  • When you submit your final, revised version, you can formally publish your dataset on Mendeley Data, which makes it fully open access to everyone, and provides the final dataset DOI in your article. The two will be both linked and archived after that. For more information on this see When will my dataset be made available online?
  • You can cite the relevant datasets in your manuscript by including a data reference in the reference list. For more information about data citation, visit the references section 'Reference Styles' in the journal's Guide for Authors.
