Ricketson to lead Roosters

Luke Ricketson has been appointed as the new Sydney Roosters captain for the 2005 National Rugby League season.

Ricketson replaces Brad Fittler, who retired as Roosters captain after last month's NRL grand final loss to the Bulldogs.

Having played 280 first grade matches for the Roosters since his debut in 1991, Ricketson says he is ready to lead the club into a new era without Fittler.

"He had a pretty important role and I basically stood in the shadows of him and just basically supported him when I could," he said.

"So now taking the job on completely by myself is something I think I'm going to relish in."

Ricketson will miss the first two matches of the 2005 NRL season, as he is serving a three-week suspension for king-hitting the Cowboys Nathan Fien in this season's preliminary final.

Ricketson was forced to miss the grand final against the Bulldogs, which they lost 16-13.

The Roosters also announced today that Jersey Flegg coach Shane Flanagan will coach the club's Premier League side.

Former Australian utility and Bulldogs and Parramatta player, Jim Dymock, will replace Flanagan as the Roosters' Flegg coach.
