Bird gets 10 weeks for kneeing

Cronulla five-eighth Greg Bird has been suspended for 10 weeks by the National Rugby League judiciary after kneeing South Sydney winger Shane Marteene in Saturday's round four clash.

The 20-year-old arrived at the NRL headquarters knowing he was likely to face a lengthy suspension.

Bird was sent off after kneeing Marteene in the head late in Saturday's game, an incident commentators described as "cowardly".

The judiciary panel accepted Bird's contrition and previous good record but imposed the hefty penalty because of the severity of the offence.
