Inside AKRFC

About us

Altrincham Kersal RFC is one of the most progressive and ambitious rugby clubs in the North of England. The 1st XV has been promoted 5 times in the last 10 seasons. The 2007/2008 season in North One is the 4th season in this league and with only the National Leagues above, a big push will again be made to gain the 6th promotion which would take the club into the “Nationals”. Despite this rapid elevation, the club still maintains the values of traditional rugby in a true ‘family’ atmosphere. We benefit from an excellent 2-way relationship with Sale Sharks. Ex AKRFC players Mark Cueto and Chris Jones have progressed through Sale to the England set up and we are confident more will follow. A number of our juniors have gone on to play for the Sale Jets.

The club benefits from the coaching services of Wayne Morris (ex Wales A), Chris Nettleton (ex 1st XV team player) and Andrew Daldry (ex 1st XV player and captain). This represents their 5th season together having steered the club to the North 2 West Championship in 2003/2004 and now in the 4th year of North One Rugby. Manager of Rugby Chris Smith is in his 11th year and has sights set on the National Leagues. Our Women’s team have also enjoyed great success over recent seasons, gaining promotion as champions into North 1 in 2003/2004.

The club also benefits from one of the strongest Mini and Junior sections in the North of England with over 350 playing. Last season, the Cheshire Cup was won by the Under 7’s, 11’s, 12’s and 14’s! The Under 16’s lost in the Final and the Junior Colts reached a National Final for the first time in the club’s history, narrowly losing to Dorking 13-10. A truly remarkable season for the Mini and Junior section.

If you are an overseas player considering joining an English club, please contact us. Over recent seasons, many overseas players have enjoyed playing at Altrincham. There are five overseas players currently in the squad and we are keen for more to join. The club has always been able to assist in finding both employment and accommodation. The club captain for the previous 2 seasons, Ben Shepherd, is himself a proud Kiwi.

All abilities and levels are catered for with 4 Senior XV’s all playing in competitive leagues. The playing facilities are excellent with modern training equipment and physiotherapy staff present at all training sessions and matches. The club also has a long-standing social tradition with regular events, a sportsman’s dinner and the now infamous end of season ball where over 400 club members dance the night away. Join our success, click here
