Cluster: Diversity/Deaf Culture and Language
Programs in this learning cluster are designed to assist in building an awareness of different cultures and to address issues associated with working effectively in the unique RIT community. As students, faculty, and staff from all cultures, backgrounds choose RIT, updating and enhancing our diversity and leadership skills is vital to our innovative pace. Since, Deaf and hard-of-hearing students make up ten percent of RIT's student enrollment, the presence of the deaf community distinguishes RIT from any other university in the world.
Topics:
Deaf Awareness: Working Together - Deaf and Hearing Colleagues
Working Together: Deaf and Hearing Colleagues is designed to provide a general orientation to deafness, Deaf culture, and communication strategies for all faculty and staff.
Faculty and Staff Sign Language Education
The Faculty and Staff Sign Language Education Program (FSSLEP) offers an array of formal and informal sign language learning opportunities for the NTID/RIT faculty and staff. Opportunities include a comprehensive curriculum of formal sign language instruction for development of basic through advanced level skills and knowledge, experimental learning activities and consultation/instruction on strategies for application of sign language to the job function.
Human Resources Diversity Information
The Human Resources Diversity web page has been designed to provide you easy access to many of the key areas responsible for diversity initiatives here on campus. From this page you will be able to link to other sites and make contact with others within RIT who are working together to achieve our diversity goals and objectives.
NTID Professional Development Group
The Center for Professional Development is a partner in providing professional development with NTID's Professional Development group. Together we seek to meet the needs of faculty and staff throughout RIT and NTID.
NTID Self Instruction Lab (SIL)
The NTID Self Instruction Lab (LBJ 3205) supports American Sign Language and spoken language skill development through individual practice. Our resources are useful for communication skills practice; auditory training for cochlear implant users; supplementing course materials; and preparing to take the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview. SIL resources can be an invaluable support to all RIT faculty, staff, and students who desire to improve expressive or receptive sign language skills or spoken language skills.
Provost Summer Intensive ASL and Deaf Culture Experience
The Office of the Provost, annually, sponsors a Provost Summer Intensive American Sign Language and Deaf Culture Experience for selected RIT Faculty/Staff. The program is coordinated through the Department of American Sign Language and Interpreting Education (ASLIE). The aim of this program is to enhance interactions among deaf and hearing members of our RIT Community.
RIT's Harassment & Discrimination Policy & Procedures
RIT's Harassment & Discrimination Policy & Procedures is offered as either an on-line course or a classroom setting that is designed to further your understanding about this important topic and to provide a means to explore this sensitive and often complex issue in-depth. RIT has an institutional commitment to continually building a diverse work force and student body. One critical element of this commitment is our existing policy prohibiting harassment and discrimination. As an RIT employee and citizen of the campus community, it is essential that you have a clear understanding of both the policy and procedures regarding harassment and discrimination.
In a collaborative effort between the Division of Student Affairs, Human Resources and the Center for Professional Development, we are offering a three hour workshop to provide RIT faculty and staff with the information, skills, and resources to demonstrate their commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for GLBT community members.
The Women's Center, in collaboration with other campus and community resources, addresses the following topical areas through its programming: Healthy Relationships, Gender and Communication, Women and Leadership, Sexual Assault, Relationship Violence, Stalking, Sexual Harassment and Personal Safety, Pornography, Women's Health Issues, Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating, Vicarious Traumatization.
