The South Australian Sex Industry Network (SIN) is a program area of the AIDS Council of South Australia and is funded as a health promotion project that aims to support the current high standards of sexual health among South Australian sex workers.
Our approach to working with sex workers is holistic and empowering; we strive to improve sex worker's lives by assisting to create an enabling environment where the health, rights and well-being of sex workers are actively promoted and enhanced. There is a lot of evidence worldwide that demonstrates that stigma and discrimination are counter-productive to HIV/AIDS education and prevention efforts and this is why SIN works in ways that sex workers report they find helpful, respectful and affirming of their lives and their work.
SIN's activities include:
- Confidential and free peer support, information, education, advocacy and referral services to sex workers. We are concerned with all the issues that concern sex workers
- Our work also encompasses working with sex industry employers and support staff to promote the occupational health & safety of sex workers
- The partners and families of sex workers can also find support and information from SIN
- A range of printed and other education & training resources aimed at sex workers and other people in involved in the sex industry
- Community development activities such as social and cultural events and publications such as the SIN magazine foster a positive sense of identity and connectedness among sex workers and help to reduce the isolation and stigma that many sex workers experience
SIN's services:
Our services are delivered within a peer education and community development framework consistent with the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. Our projects work directly with sex workers and where appropriate, other participants in the SA sex industry by providing information, education, support, advocacy and referral services with the aim of minimising the transmission of HIV, HCV and STIs among sex workers and their private & commercial partners.
As well as serving all workers in the sex industry, SIN provides services specifically for:
- male sex workers
- sex workers from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds
- sex workers who inject drugs
- street based sex workers
Multicultural Gambling Project
The project works directly with CALD background/migrant sex workers and where appropriate, other participants in the SA sex industry with a goal of reducing the harms associated with problem gambling. The objectives of the project are to increase awareness of problem gambling, the support services available and increase peer support among Asian sex workers.
