I've been feeling a bit worthy today. So, after saying a prayer to Saint Geldof (the patron saint of bourgeois worthiness) I was wandering around putting in some energy-saver lightbulbs that the occupational therapists had given us for free (is this really what OTs do all day?) Once that was done, all my lightbulbs except except three in the landing (plus two lamps that only take 15watt pygmy bulbs anyway) are now energy savers. I'm probably not doing too bad on my carbon footprint, to be honest. I live in a modest, well-insulated flat where you only have to turn the heating on for an hour or so before it starts to get stuffy. I've only just started learning to drive after spending my 20s using public transport. I'm usually pretty good about turning the TV and digital box off at the wall rather than leaving it on standby. Al Gore is my homeboy. I've also just signed up for a fruit and vegetable box scheme, where you pay £10.50 to get a box of organic fruit and vegetables delivered to your door. I'm a bit of a cynic about organic foods, but they don't seem to do non-organic versions of the scheme. Even so, you get 10-13 items in the box, so it's probably reasonable value (assuming one item means a bag of apples, a bunch of bananas etc, not an apple, a banana...) It should get delivered tomorrow evening. So yeah, I am so eco-worthy. That'll offset a few coal-fired power plants in China.

I had a friend who used to get organic food delivered like that. Honestly, it tasted so good, carrots like I've never had before or since, chicken that was actually so pink it looked like a red meat, not pumped full of water and delicious, etc, etc. Well worth it in my opinion if you can afford it. Hope you enjoy it.

Well worth it in my opinion if you can afford it.To be honest, £10.50 for 10-13 items sounds like not much more than you'd pay at Tesco for the same amount of fruit and veg. I thought I'd try it out because I'm not eating enough fruit and veg, and that convenience store at the top of street has a pretty abysmal selection of manky, wilted specimens.

you get quite a lot in the boxes. The one we get costs £10 and we get more than enough to feed three of us (one completely vegetarian)even though it says 'suitable for one person'!

Oh yeah, well fair enough, I didn't mean to imply it was bad value. It's just the regular commitment of it that I wouldn't want at the moment. I get most of my veg in a bag from the freezer section, sad to say.

I really wish "high-end food" and "food produced according to hippy-dippy German mysticism" weren't identified so strongly. I'd pay top dollar for gourmet food made from GMOs.

Same here, to be honest. Even so, a tenner for 10-13 items is probably pretty good value, especially if you're having it delivered to your door.

Alternatively, you can get yer arse down to the Riverside Market every Sunday from 10am–2pm for your organic veg from local farmers needs, just across the river from the Millllllllllennnnnnnnnium Stadium. Not that I've been lately. I don't get up until 3.15pm on a Sunday. At least. By the way, when I bumped into you I was quite taken aback by how clean and healthy you looked. Not that you looked dirty and unhealthy before. But there was a certain glow about you. You're not pregnant, are you?

I had a glow, did I? Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not pregnant, though missdisco may disagree with me on that. I had just come off a night shift though. Clearly sleep deprivation gives me a glow.

Or just get home delivery and I won't even have to leave the house. :p

Sounds like you're doing it right to me! I wish I could get a box scheme but it would be a little absured in halls. Maybe next year, depending on who I live with. Certainly when I have a regular income anyway. We get one at home and it's great, better value than non-organic at the supermarket and it all tastes very good :) Now I'm here I go to Borough Market which is more expensive, but fun.
