Some notes
The figures given here for elections from 1885 to 1945 differ from those in F.W.S. Craig’s “British Electoral Facts” because they are adjusted for votes cast in the two-member seats. In addition, in the results for Ireland up to 1918, a series of discrepancies was found between F.W.S. Craig and Brian M. Walker’s “Parliamentary Election Results in Ireland”. The figures given here are those in Walker.
Alliances Where several parties or individual candidates are in an electoral or political alliance they are grouped together. Notably among these are the Coalition Government in 1918, the National Government in 1931-1940, and the later alliance between Conservatives and National Liberals. In 1931, the Independent Labour Party was still officially part of the Labour Party but refused to accept the Standing Orders of the Parliamentary Labour Party; in addition, several Labour candidates were members of the ILP but sponsored by local parties.
Change % No figures for vote change can be given for the 1922 general election because of the secession of the Irish Free State, and the existence of the Coalition in 1918.
Coalition The figures given in 1918 for the Coalition are a serious underestimate because most non-Coalition Conservatives supported it, and 9 successful non-Coalition Liberals accepted the Coalition Liberal whip on election with others giving support on some occasions. Of the five Coalition Labour candidates, only two actually received a Coalition ‘Coupon’ and were official, but the other three were full supporters of the Coalition and had no Coalition candidate put up against them.
Constitutionalists This label was used by a number of right-wing Liberals in the 1924 general election who wanted to distance themselves from the party’s temporary support for the Labour Government. Six of them (four of whom were elected) were official Liberal candidates, and six others (two of whom were elected) subsequently joined the Conservative Party.
Liberal Unionists No attempt has been made to disaggregate the Conservative vote from the Liberal Unionist vote in 1886-1910, because information on which side of the Unionist grouping an individual candidate belonged is sometimes contradictory.
Number of Candidates The number of people actually seeking election is in some cases lower than the total number of candidacies shown, because some candidates fought more than one seat.
Sinn Féin Sinn Féin’s elected MPs do not take their seats in the House of Commons.
University Constituencies These are included with the territorial constituencies in the vote totals.
