ARCHIVED: How can I print routing bar codes on envelopes?
Many shareware and public domain programs are available for printing routing bar codes on envelopes; see For Microsoft Windows, how can I get freeware and shareware? or For Mac OS X, where can I download freeware, shareware, commercial software, and software updates? Also, TrueType fonts exist for most bar code formats. Additionally, word processing programs, including Microsoft Word and WordPerfect, have options for printing bar codes on envelopes. See the instructions below.
Note: POSTNET bar codes are valid only with US addresses.
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word 2007 does not support this feature; see ARCHIVED: What functionalities available in Microsoft Word 2003 are not available in Word 2007?
Word 2004 and 2008
- From the
Tools
menu, selectLabels...
orEnvelopes...
.
- In the appropriate box(es), type the address(es), including zip codes.
- Check
Delivery point barcode
. Additionally, for envelopes, you can checkFIM-A
to add a Facing Identification Mark to the front of the envelope.Note:
Delivery point barcode
will be grayed out if the label selected is not suitable for POSTNET bar code printing. - Click
OK

Word 2002 and 2003
- From the
Tools
menu, selectLetters and Mailings
, and thenEnvelopes and Labels
.
- Click
Options
, and then click theEnvelope Options
tab.
- Check
Delivery point barcode
, and then clickOK
.
Word 2001 and v.X
- From the
Tools
menu, selectEnvelopes...
.
- In the "Delivery Address:" section, check
Delivery point barcode
. Additionally, you can checkFIM-A
to add a Facing Identification Mark to the front of the envelope.
Word 2000
- From the
Tools
menu, selectEnvelopes and Labels...
.
- Click the
Options
button, and then click theEnvelope Options
tab.
- Check
Delivery point barcode
, and then clickOK
.
WordPerfect
WordPerfect 12 and 13 (or X3)
- From the
Format
menu, selectEnvelope
.
- Type the delivery and return addresses, including zip codes.
- To add the routing bar codes, under the mailing address, check
Include barcode
. ClickBarcode
to input the routing zip code or adjust the position of the bar code on the envelope.
WordPerfect 9
- From the
Format
menu, selectEnvelopes...
. An envelope document will open.
- Type the delivery and return addresses, including zip codes.
- To add the routing bar codes, click the
Bar Code
button on the toolbar. WordPerfect will then ask for a nine- or five-digit zip code, as well as a location to print the bar code (either above or below the mailing address). You must select one of these two radio buttons; if you leave theNone
radio button checked, WordPerfect will not print the bar code.
