A linear shooter done right.

Project 2. That's the working title developer PlayDead has pinned on its Limbo follow-up, and while the first screen looks very much like a Limbo sequel, well, it's not. And you know what? I'm happy about that. Limbo told its beautiful dark tale. Sure, it was an ambiguous tale open to interpretation, but it was its own complete experience, and I look forward to PlayDead creating an all new one. Read More »
Despite its age, World of Warcraft still has a certain draw for me. I haven't had time to log in and play it seriously in months, but that hasn't diminished my desire. Funny enough, playing through Diablo 3 actually made me want to play WoW even more. Now that draw is going to be even stronger now with the recently revealed World of Warcraft Summer Challenges, a focused effort to get concentrated groups of players to visit many of the epic areas throughout Azeroth, all in the name of awesome loot drops. Thief 4 is still lurking in the shadows at Eidos Montreal, with only a sparse, logo emblazoned Thi4f website to show since its 2009 announcement. Not even the bright lights and scantily clad booth babes of E3 2012 could lure Garrett out into the open. But based on a demo reel from a lighting artist claiming to have worked on the game, Thief 4 is still taking shape behind closed doors. See what appears to be the new Garrett in action within. League of Legends' prodigal explorer, Ezreal, becomes a mechsuit-wearing warrior with Riot's new Legendary Skin, Pulsefire Ezreal. While that may not be news of interest to non Ez players, the skin is actually noteworthy for all of LoL because it introduces a cool new MOBA feature: skins that evolve and transform as you level up your hero. The best way to get your fans pumped about an upcoming game is to show off how rad it can be in action. And that's exactly what Ubisoft did by showing off a solid seven minutes of Assassin's Creed 3. The demo from E3 now includes developer commentary and features Connor opening up several cans of whupass on British troops. The trailer has everything from the hunting mechanics to outright combat to stealth kills and chase sequences. And hoo boy is it all rather pretty to look at. Connor climbs and swings from trees with ease, fights with a fluidity that previous Assassin's Creed protagonists wish they could pull off, and the assassinations are, well, something to behold. Ah, the joys of digital distribution. Instead of having to deal with all the miscellaneous stuff that surrounds a traditional game release like marketing and making sure stores have it, you can just toss the game up whenever you damn well feel like it. And that's exactly what Zeboyd Games is doing with Penny Arcade's On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness: Episode 3. Originally slated for July 10, it's now dropping on Steam on June 25, due to the fact that it's, you know, finished. Read More »
Missing the height of the vampire craze by only a year or so, The Sims 3's next expansion revolves around vamps, werewolves, zombies, witches, and more, making it only slightly less terrifying than the last one. Based on the trailer (below), the werewolf transformations actually look kinda cool, and the potential for starting zombie outbreaks to wreak havoc on the idyllic communities of the Sims does have some appeal. It sure is getting lonely on my Star Wars: The Old Republic server. Like so many other subscribers, many of my friends have stopped playing BioWare's recent foray into the world of MMOs. Those who have stuck it out are strewn throughout the digital galaxy on a variety of servers. Fortunately for us, we can now meet up with our buds through free server transfers. Granted, you can't jump to any server you want, and there are a few stipulations as to which characters you can transfer, but hey, it's a step in the right direction. Read More »
Apples and mayonnaise. Chocolate and baking soda. Dogs and cats. Some things are never meant to be combined, but it looks like Gratuitous Tank Battles and Resonance didn't get the memo -- both games released playable demos today. One is a tower-defense game (read our review), while the other looks to be another quality old-school adventure from publisher Wadjet Eye Games. Read More »
One of the most interesting things about the Civilization games is how they represent historical facts through gameplay. For example, in the upcoming Civilization V expansion Gods & Kings, Ethiopia's ability to defend itself from European colonialists is represented by a combat bonus attained when its cities are outnumbered. Attila the Hun's famous raiding ability is shown off with a massive battering ram that replaces traditional spearmen units. To further show off how the folks at Firaxis are representing the nine new civilizations in the expansion, check out the trailer. Read More »
It took bitComposer Games awhile to get Jagged Alliance: Back in Action right, releasing a patch containing a painfully absent Tactical Mode three months after launch. Yes, the reboot of the tactical RPG classic did not include Tactical Mode at launch. Now it does. All's well that ends well, and all that. That brings us to today's news: publisher Kalypso Media announced that the first complete new story in the JA universe in nearly 10 years, Crossfire, will be ready for tactical role-playing later this summer. The Potato Sack is back. In April 2011, Valve pushed 13 indie games -- at 75% off no less -- as part of a Potato Sack promo to launch Portal 2. Why "Potato Sack?" Blame a desperate, electricity starved GLaDOS. Well, Valve is at it again with the Potato Sack Reunion, a bundle of 13 indie gems that can all be yours for just $20. Read More »
Hackers and cheats have transformed Max Payne 3's multiplayer into a Zack Snyder production: a slow-motion bullet ballet that's easy on the eyes but devoid of substance. Rockstar aims to do something about that, something uniquely just. It's called the Cheaters Pool, and it's the server you'll be relegated to along with all the other ne'er-do-wells if you're caught using a hack or exploit. Read More »

No sooner did Anakhoresis ask "Whatever happened to demos?" than this demo for Spec Ops: The Line popped up to say "Hello, would you like to try me before you make your purchasing decision?" If you haven't heard much about it yet, SOTL is a fairly standard modern military third-person shooter, but it attempts to distinguish itself with a Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now-inspired plot of things gone horribly wrong (on multiple levels) in Dubai. Read on to watch a trailer and start your demo download. Read More »
