E3 1998 took place in Atlanta and Nintendo was there to promote the Nintendo 64 heavily.

The Big Announcements

The pre-show press briefing was led by Nintendo of America veteran Howard Lincoln, who discussed Rare, the formation of Nintendo Software Technology and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which was to be released in the fall of the same year.

Miyamoto's Appearance

A finalized version of Ocarina of Time was shown at the conference, and Shigeru Miyamoto appeared to discuss it, saying "With the dramatic graphics, I hope you feel like you have become Link. I hope you can feel his curiosity, his fear, his sense of danger. I feel the Zelda games are a great adventure book that combines the imagination of the author and reader."

Pokemon, in its many forms, was also shown at E3 1997, and a pre-show press release introduced it thusly "Tagged as the hottest craze in Japan captivating more than 8 million children, Pokemon makes its U.S. premiere in September with the launch of a Game Boy game, a dedicated animated television series and a multitude of licensed products including Pokemon Pikachu, a virtual pet monster that inspires its owners to take a stroll in the park."

Finally, the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Printer and Game Boy Camera were also shown for the first time at E3 1998.
