Technology, Research to be national priority

New Technology, Research and Atomic Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday said he plans to make Technology, Research and Development, a national priority in Sri Lanka.

Research and Development does not work unless it becomes a national priority, the minister said. The subject is still not in the national agenda, he said.

Asked if his new ministry was a challenge for him, Ranawaka said being a professional in the field of electrical and power engineering for over 20 years, the new ministry is not going to be a challenge.

He said his aim is to promote clean and green technologies to rural areas.

We have not touched upon nuclear energy. I look forward to a rapid expansion of research on non-nuclear power generation.

Separate development arms will be set up to develop research on hydro-electricity and Nanotechnology, the minister said.
