How the University works

The Senate

The Senate consists of holders of any Doctor's degree of the University, any Master's degree of the University, or the degree of Bachelor of Divinity of the University, and all current members of the Regent House.

The Senate was the governing body of the University until 1926. It now elects the Chancellor and the High Steward (who is one of the high officers of the University) and enacts legislation to regulate these elections. Membership of the Senate confers senior status and certain formal privileges, such as borrowing rights at the University library.
