In early June, Elkhorn Slough Foundation will close escrow on a 107-acre property, which rises from Elkhorn Road to the ridgeline on the eastern edge of the slough. The property links the 1,700-acre Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve with a three-mile stretch of ESF-protected lands, and features a working farm and 25 acres of environmentally sensitive habitat including maritime chaparral and oak woodlands. Its steep sandy slopes have been subject to erosion, and sediment moving off the fields has flowed into the wetlands on the National Estuarine Research Reserve.
The California State Coastal Conservancy is funding $1,580,000 to support the land acquisition. The Elkhorn Slough Foundation must raise all the funds necessary to develop a sustainable, certified organic farm on the gentle slopes and to restore the steep upper slopes to native habitat. Today, you can help us reach our $450,000 goal with a donation to support this restoration work.
Local news program, KION, featured the town of Moss Landing last week. Of course, that included a visit to the Elkhorn Slough Reserve. In case you missed it, watch the story now. Many of the otter video clips were taken with the Elkhorn Slough OtterCam, which is right here to enjoy.
