Protecting Monterey County for Future Generations
I fight for you, not special interests. I’ll continue to stand up to unaccountable developers who don’t care about our cherished natural places or the traffic their developments create, and continue to keep County government transparent and responsible. My continued advocacy for local jobs, affordable workforce housing, and early childhood education will ensure all of our communities in the County are healthy, safe and stable for future generations.
Since the day I was sworn in in 2009, I have devoted my time on the Board of Supervisors to listening to your needs – and striving to make county government as responsive, transparent and effective as possible.
I am proud to champion your interests, not special interests – and we have changed the way the County does business:

I am proud to champion your interests, not special interests – and we have changed the way the County does business:
- I am the first Supervisor to hold regular community meetings to review Board of Supervisors agendas and discuss issues with residents – over 200 community meetings so far!
- I championed and increased public access and government transparency by requiring the County to put the Board of Supervisors agenda on the County website.
- Monterey County must get its fair share. I increased public participation in the development of the County Legislative Platform, which sets priorities for State and Federal resources coming into Monterey County.
- I advocated for and successfully implemented an annual process that for the first time, requires performance reviews for departments and top County staff, ensuring priorities and goals are on track – and taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.
It’s been my honor to represent the residents of District 4.
Please join us to continue protecting our County for future generations.
Housing for Working Families
Our County is suffering from a shortage of housing that people can afford. Many people who work here –including teachers, hospitality, and public safety providers—can no longer afford to buy a home in our District.
I’ve convened cities, the County and housing providers to work together to create more housing that working families and people in different stages of their life can afford. Our public safety, economic vitality and quality of life depend on it.

Gangs & Youth Violence Prevention
Reducing gangs and youth violence in our neighborhoods is my top priority. That’s why I’ve secured millions in state and federal grants to support gang prevention in the County. We must identify and address the root causes of violence to make all of our neighborhoods safer, including reducing the number of guns on the street and expanding after-school, anti-drug and anti-bullying programs.
I believe in a hands-on approach to reducing and preventing crime in our communities:
I believe in a hands-on approach to reducing and preventing crime in our communities:
- As a founding member of the Community Alliance for Safety and Peace (CASP), I successfully secured federal funding for Salinas, which was selected as one of only eight cities nationwide to receive funding from a White House initiative aimed at preventing youth violence and rebuilding communities.
- I am proud to have helped steer over $1 million in State funding to the Seaside Youth Violence Prevention Group.
- I continue to support the Marina Teen Center that serves about 400 students daily and has helped reduce truancy in Marina schools in partnership with the Marina Police Department and the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District.

Protecting our Economic Vitality & Natural Beauty
I understand that our County’s natural beauty, water and wildlife contribute to our quality of life and our region’s economic vitality, including the 2.3 billion dollar tourism economy. I am a strong advocate for protecting our natural resources and open spaces for future generations and the visitors who contribute to our regional economy, to all enjoy. I have and will continue to advocate for protecting our County’s natural resources and economic vitality.
