Slowly rising lagoon
A few days ago, everything was working out perfectly for the Carmel River’s remnant steelhead population. With the San Clemente Dam gone, the door was open for more young steelhead smolts to safely reach the lagoon, and eventually the sea, than had been possible for many years. Then, relatively gentle rains put enough flow in the river to provide easy fish passage from the higher elevation tributaries to the lagoon, but not enough to breach the high summer sandbar at the lagoon mouth. Behind the bar, the slowly filling lagoon was becoming an ideal habitat for young steelhead to undergo the rapid growth and physiological changes necessary to survive at sea. Concours d’Arrogance: America’s premier celebration of the lifestyle that’s destroying the planet.
My great-grandfather, Alec Eells, was a San Francisco attorney in the 1890’s. That is, his office was in San Francisco. His actual business was all over the state. He needed to be in Sacramento one day, Santa Barbara the next, then back to San Francisco for an early court session, etc. I know this because he kept a careful diary. Read the rest of this entry »

The Monterey Peninsula and the ocean: “Water, water every where, Nor any drop to drink.”
As everyone knows, the Monterey Peninsula has been trying and failing for decades to agree on and build a water project that will “solve” the Peninsula’s water problems. With the latest plan – the Regional Desal Plant – having lost all four wheels and gone over the rail on the first turn, we think it’s time to take a look at the fundamental difference of opinion – the political divide – that has thus far made progress impossible. Humans aren’t the only fishermen hoping to see the Carmel River steelhead population recover.
As everyone knows, it’s absolutely imperative that we support the current operating agreements for Marina Coast Water District’s Regional Desal Plant regardless of how bad a deal they may be for the ratepayers of the Monterey Peninsula, and regardless of whether the project will actually result in any benefit to the Carmel River, BECAUSE IF WE DON’T THE STATE WATER RESOURCES CONTROL BOARD WILL CUT OFF OUR WATER AND BRING OUR ECONOMY TO ITS KNEES! The Carmel River meets the ocean
A Santa Clara County judge today removed the temporary injunction, imposed last November by a Monterey County judge, and allowed the much-feared Cease and Desist Order (limiting Cal-Am’s ability to pump from the Carmel River) to go into effect. Read the rest of this entry »

The Carmel River
A few weeks ago, Monterey Peninsula residents were treated to an unusual spectacle as much of the local business and political leadership boarded busses for Sacramento for a humiliating session of begging and pleading with the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB).
