Food
Mostly plants (flowers, leaves, fruit) from a range of families, with a preference for Lupines. L. californicus is not considered a "pest species" of economic importance [Schaefer & Ahmad (2000)].
Life Cycle
Five instars: 1.black head, thorax, and appendages, red abdomen
2.-5. are metallic blue-black; 5.with a red spot between wing pads.
[from Booth (1970; cited below) Booth's study contains the most complete description to date of the biology of any Largus sp.
Remarks
Though currently a valid species ( ITIS ), Halstead (1972; see reference below), after examining "specimen from seven populations of Largus cinctus ranging from Washington to southern Mexico", found that some specimen in any population matches Van Duzee's description of californicus . Halstead therefore considers californicus a synonym of cinctus. However, Dr. Carl Schaefer thinks that both species - L. californicus and L. cinctus - are valid. (pers. communication, HW)
The genus is currently being reviewed by Schaefer & Ahmad (in preparation).
