Hello David -
Although I appreciate your efforts, I believe this page is incorrectly placing perplexa as a ssp. of affinis.
Pelham (2008) lists the following subspecies for C. affinis:
washingtonia, affinis, homoperplexa, apama, albipalpis.
Callophrys perplexa W. Barnes & Benjamin, 1923, is a species (still in subgenus Callophrys) with the following subspecies listed:
superperplexa, perplexa, oregonensis.
If you don't have the 2008 hard copy of Pelham, it is worth the purchase, or persuading your library to add it.
Please see also Butterflies of America; careful perusal should convince you that it is currently the most authoritative, and informative butterfly website. Here I'm adding a link to their Callophrys perplexa page, which includes the above listed subspecies.
My little flutterers here are C. dumetorum race perplexa (now C. perplexa perplexa), with San Diego the type locality. (Pelham, 2008; (1) )

I apparently didn't double check this;
however, I thought I was following the nomenclature in Pelham's list and the Butterflies of America web site. Oops. I see that even in the older version, it is separated out from C. affinis.

To be honest, I don't have a strong preference about the proper placement of a number of the various names in this group, but I do have opinions. To sum it up in brief, I think the jury is still out on many relationships in this group, and that the naming up to date still has problems; some names I think are still misplaced. I suspect that there are only two "real" biological species involved. However, I'm not experienced enough over a wide enough area to be expert by any stretch.

All that aside, I was indeed intending to follow the Pelham nomenclature, as mostly it seems reasonable, and we have designated it as our reference. It is the best guide we have right now. It seems I should have checked a little more closely, and to be honest I think I must have been half asleep when I worked on this taxon. So, I'll correct this to match soon, or if you wish to, go ahead and have at it.

I fixed it
following Pelham's nomenclature.
