Formed in 2009, the Archive Team (not to be confused with the archive.org Archive-It Team) is a rogue archivist collective dedicated to saving copies of rapidly dying or deleted websites for the sake of history and digital heritage. The group is 100% composed of volunteers and interested parties, and has expanded into a large amount of related projects for saving online and digital history.
The capacity of the Python Software Foundation to support the development of CPython, the reference implementation of Python, hasn't kept pace with the growth in popularity of the programming language. CPython is developed and maintained largely by volunteers, and has accrued a large backlog of open issues (>7,500 open bugs http://bugs.python.org/) and unmerged code contributions (>1,200 open pull requests https://github.com/python/cpython/pulls). Additionally, there are many R&D requests from users that we need to address.
The PSF had strategically planned to support CPython this year. However, we were financially impacted due to PyCon 2020's cancellation (and uncertainty around 2021), so we are seeking funding!
The goal is to hire to address backlog, and afterwards, hire to address new projects.

Recently, the PSF applied for a grant to help Python with the PR queue/other backlog. If the grant doesn't come through in November 2020, the goal is to concentrate on getting donations and sponsorships to pay for that role. Once the backlog is addressed, we can shift focus to funding new projects/R&D! Receiving $12,000 a month will either help us fund the backlog work if the grant doesn't pan out, or it will help us fund new projects/R&D!
