For eight years, Pokémon GO has been an incredibly popular mobile game that holds a lot of nostalgia for long-time fans of the franchise. Currently, there are hundreds of Pokémon across nearly a dozen generations that players can catch, evolve, and battle with. Like most Pokémon video games, some of the most highly sought-after Pokémon in Pokémon GO are the Eevee evolutions.

Traditionally, most games in the Pokémon franchise require trainers to obtain and use a specific stone to evolve their Eevee. For example, if players want a Jolteon, they'd need to acquire a Thunder Stone and then use it on the Eevee they want to evolve. These items don't exist in Pokémon GO, so players need to rely on other methods to ensure they're getting their desired Eeveelution.

The Naming Trick is the Easiest Eeveelution Method

This Method Works for Every Eeveelution Once

Everything to Know About Pokémon GO's Oct. 2024 Sewaddle Community Day

Sewadd'e's Community Day is coming up next month in Pokémon GO. Here's everything players need to know about the event.

The easiest way to evolve every Eeveelution in Pokémon GO is the naming method. Each Eeveelution has a specific name that relates to other Pokémon media, making this method a nice little Easter egg for long-term fans, too. This method works for every single Eeveelution available in Pokémon GO, but it's important to remember that this method only works once per Eeveelution. The naming trick guarantees the trainer will be able to collect all eight Eeveelutions without worrying about evolving the wrong one.

How to Name Eevee in Pokémon GO

  1. Select an Eevee to evolve
    • If players want to ensure they evolve a strong Eevee, they can click on the three bars at the bottom of the screen and click on the "Appraise" feature. Their team's leader will appear and give the Pokémon a rating between zero and three stars. Needless to say, aiming for a three-star will give trainers the best outcome. There is a slim chance for a Pokémon to be "perfect," which is higher than three stars, but this is exceptionally rare.
  2. Make sure to have 25 Eevee candies (each Eeveelution costs 25 Eevee candies)
  3. Click on the pencil icon beside Eevee's name
  4. Type in the desired name and confirm
  5. If the trick works (meaning it's the player's first time using it), players should see the "EVOLVE" shadow change to the desired Eeveelution. This is a newer feature. In earlier Pokémon GO updates it would remain a question mark. This update allows players a chance to confirm before spending their candies.

If players select a shiny Eevee or an event Eevee, the corresponding Eeveelution will be the shiny version or the event version. For example, if players evolve a shiny Eevee into an Espeon, their Espeon will be the shiny, bright green variant of the Pokémon. If players evolve an Eevee with a flower tucked behind its ear into a Vaporeon, the Vaporeon will also have a flower.

Other Ways to Guarantee a Specific Eeveelution

The Naming Method Only Works Once, but There are Other Ways

As mentioned, the naming method is the simplest way to ensure trainers get one of every Eeveelution. Unfortunately, the naming method only works once and there are plenty of reasons trainers may want to evolve a duplicate of an Eeveelution they already have. They might want to evolve a shiny Eevee or an event Eevee into their favorite Eeveelution. Their original Eeveelution may not be particularly powerful, so they want to evolve another one with better stats.

The list goes on and on, but once players have exhausted the naming method, guaranteeing a specific Eeveelution becomes much harder. Fortunately, there is still a method for almost every Eeveelution. If players evolve an Eevee without using any special methods, there is a one in three chance it will be a Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon. To get any other Eeveelution, players need to use one of the following methods.

Desired Eeveelution

How to Force an Evolution

Espeon

Make Eevee your buddy and walk it for about 10 km (6.2 miles). Once done, evolve the Eevee during the day.

Flareon

Evolve an Eevee with 25 Eevee candies. There's no way to force an evolution. Instead, there is a 1 in 3 chance of getting the desired Eeveelution.

Glaceon

Evolve near an active Glacial Lure Module.

Jolteon

Evolve an Eevee with 25 Eevee candies. There's no way to force an evolution. Instead, there is a 1 in 3 chance of getting the desired Eeveelution.

Leafeon

Evolve near an active Mossy Lure Module.

Sylveon

Make Eevee your buddy and earn 70 hearts.

Umbreon

Make Eevee your buddy and walk it for about 10 km (6.2 miles). Once done, evolve the Eevee at night.

Vaporeon

Evolve an Eevee with 25 Eevee candies. There's no way to force an evolution. Instead, there is a 1 in 3 chance of getting the desired Eeveelution.

How to Evolve an Espeon

An Espeon in Pokemon GO

To evolve an Espeon without the naming trick, players will need to select an Eevee and make it their buddy. With the Eevee as their buddy, players need to walk that Eevee 10 kilometers (which is a little more than six miles). Once players have explored 10 kilometers with Eevee as their buddy, they can evolve the Eevee during the day. Make sure the game hasn't begun its evening transition. If players evolve the Eevee at night, they'll get an Umbreon instead. Players have to use the Eevee that was assigned as their buddy. Evolving a different Eevee won't work.

How to Evolve Primeape in Pokémon GO

The Pokémon games are all about building out the Pokédex and fans need to evolve Primeape to complete the crew in Pokémon Go!

Fortunately, evolving a Glaceon without the naming method is extremely simple. Players need to set up a Glacial Lure Module at a Pokéstop (or find a Pokéstop with an active Glacial Lure Module). While in the Pokéstop's radius, players can evolve any Eevee in their inventory for a Glaceon. The Eevee does not need to be their buddy for this method to work.

How to Evolve a Leafeon

A Leafeon in Pokemon GO

The method for evolving a Leafeon is the same as evolving a Glaceon. Instead of the Glacial Lure Module, the player will need to set up (or find an active) Mossy Lure Module. While in the radius of the Pokéstop with the active lure, players can evolve any Eevee of their choice to get a Leafeon. Once again, the Eevee doesn't need to be a buddy.

How to Evolve a Sylveon

A Sylveon in Pokemon GO

Sylveon is, by far, the most annoying Eeveelution to evolve. This does make sense since Sylveon is a fan favorite. Sylveon is also a fairy type, making it incredibly valuable where some of the other Eeveelutions aren't. To get a Sylveon without the naming method, players need to choose an Eevee to make their buddy. With Eevee as a buddy, players need to earn 70 friendship hearts to increase the bond between the trainer and Pokémon.

There are several ways to earn hearts. Players can walk with their buddy. Every 2 kilometers will reward one heart for a max of three hearts a day. Players can also earn three hearts a day by giving their buddy treats (berries) and battling with their Pokémon. Visiting a new Pokéstop or gym, following a route, taking snapshots of the Pokémon, and playing with them will all award one star a day. In total, players can earn up to 13 hearts a day with their buddy if they do everything. It'll take a minimum of six days to evolve a Sylveon if the player keeps on top of the hearts.

Dynamax and Gigantamax in Pokémon GO: Everything You Need to Know

Pokémon GO is constantly making exciting updates inspired by the main series and now Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon are making their debut.

Evolving Umbreon is the same process as evolving Espeon. Players need to select an Eevee to make their buddy. Walk that Eevee 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles). Once players have walked 10 km, they need to evolve their buddy at night. If they evolve during the day, they'll get an Espeon instead.

How to Evolve the Original Three - Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon

Unfortunately, there is no method (outside the naming method) to force evolution when it comes to the original three Eeveelutions from Pokémon's first generation. Instead, Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon are the default results when players evolve an Eevee. If that Eevee hasn't met any of the requirements for the other five evolutions, players will have a one-in-three chance of getting Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon. Each Eeveelution has a 33.3% chance of evolving. This can be incredibly frustrating, but players will need to continue evolving Eevees at random until the one they want drops.
