Summary |
This collection consists of two copies of the photocopy manuscript of Postmarked Washington, Thurston County. Mr. Ramsey wrote a series of manuscripts on most of the counties of Washington State. Many have been published. Also included is the correspondence among Fred L. Ramsey, Guy's son; Jeanne Engerman (now Crisp), WSL Washington Room librarian; Glen Adams, owner and publisher of Ye Galleon Press and Bert Webber, research photojournalist concerning the publication of the Eastern Washington counties. The letters are dated from Nov. 1985 to July 1987. There were some concerns, problems and confusion among the individuals about the publication of the Eastern Washington counties and the location of the manuscripts for those counties are discussed in the correspondence. |

Biographical/Historical Data |
Guy Reed Ramsey was born on August 15, 1894 at Warrensburg, Missouri where he was educated in the public schools. After high school graduation in 1913, he entered the tire business. He worked in stores in Kansas City, MO; Joplin, MO and Jacksonville, FL. After he served a year in World War I, he returned to Kansas City. At the age of 31, he enrolled in the College of Forestry at the University of Washington. He received his bachelor's degree in 1929 and a Master of Science in Forestry in 1931. He taught at the Davey Institute of Tree Surgery, served as foreman in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps at Mount Rainier National Park and Riverside State Park, and taught for 10 years at Iowa State College. In 1944 he returned to Portland, OR to join a wood preservative business. After retiring in January 1960, he assembled historical information on post offices of the State of Washington and prepared it in manuscript form under the title Postmarked Washington. Ramsey passed away in 1980. |
