Domestic Terrorism Prevention Unit: Program Areas

Program Support

The DTPU Program Support team aids in the development of Threat Assessment Management (TAM) team infrastructure throughout the state and reviews Domestic Terrorism Prevention Plans submitted by jurisdictions. The Program Support team also oversees funding disbursement to support Plan development and related activities and works closely with jurisdictions to develop strategies based on existing TAM teams in New York State and nationwide best practices.

Education & Awareness

The DTPU Education and Awareness team develops and provides training for specialized communities who likely interact with individuals on the pathway to violence. These trainings teach community members how to recognize the signs of radicalization and how to move individuals off the pathway to violence. The Education and Awareness team also coordinates with the State Preparedness Training Center in Oriskany, NY to provide ongoing training for groups, including law enforcement, educators, mental healthcare providers, social services professionals, faith communities, and others.

Policy and Research

The DTPU Policy and Research group maintains awareness of current trends to ensure that all unit activity is informed by research and the current threat environment. The group works closely with the New York State Intelligence Center to identify and assess trends in New York State, the United States, and overseas that may have an impact to the state. The Policy and Research group also coordinates with other DHSES' Office of Counter Terrorism units on cross-functional areas and DHSES Policy & Program Development on major strategic initiatives.
