"I think that black and white pictures are intrinsically finer than color. I think that I have never seen a really great color photograph." - Irving Penn
With each passing year, I notice more than I did the previous year. I remember really witnessing the Spring transition for the first time during the pandemic. Although I have lived in the Midwest my entire life, I never truly appreciated the visual transition from winter to spring.
That’s a beautiful thing about photography: it teaches you how to see.
I spent Sunday night sitting outside in the garden, listening to the birds and watching the leaves dance in the breeze. Suddenly, I noticed how much green surrounded me, and that color felt incredibly powerful and nourishing. This occurs every season, but lately, I've been paying closer attention to things.
I woke up the other day with an idea for a new addition to the newsletter — an ongoing feature focused on our collective appreciation of color.
Call for COLOR work
There was a time when color photography wasn’t taken seriously. Of course, that was ages ago, and now color is the default. I’d bet that more people make color images than black-and-white ones in 2025. Do you think that’s true?
I plan to launch a periodic feature focused on photographs that celebrate the pure pleasure of color, for both the newsletter and Instagram. This new feature will showcase periodic selections of color photography to brighten your inbox and news feed, similar to what I do with Five Photographers or my Show & Tell series.
If you have something colorful in your archive to share, I would love to see it. As always, email is the best way to reach me. I’m looking forward to hearing from you — thank you in advance for sharing your work with me. Cheers!
The sheer joy of it. Oh yes...
Lovely cool, Andy!😊🙏..yet, how to apply?🤔👋
