Motor Vehicle Use Maps

Under the 2005 Travel Management Rule, every national forest and grassland is required to publish a motor vehicle use map (MVUM), which shows where people are allowed to drive. The MVUM displays National Forest System roads, trails and areas designated as open to motorized travel by vehicle class (e.g., highway-legal vehicles, vehicles less than 50 inches wide and motorcycles) and season of use.

Because of the strict nationwide requirements to limit what data is shown on an official MVUM, a companion motor vehicle travel map (MVTM) is provided for some districts as they become available. The MVTM contains all the information shown on the MVUM plus additional data that makes it more user friendly, such as certain navigational and reference information needed for recreating on a national forest or grassland.

MVUMs and MVTMs are freely available to the public on our website or at our ranger district or supervisor's offices.
