Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS)

Vermont PRAMS

For the Health of Mothers and Infants

Vermont PRAMS (Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System) is an ongoing survey of Vermont mothers who recently gave birth. PRAMS is a research study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Vermont Department of Health. The goal of PRAMS is to improve the health of mothers and infants by reducing adverse outcomes such as low birth weight, infant mortality and morbidity, and maternal morbidity.

PRAMS was initiated nationally in 1987 because infant mortality rates were no longer declining as rapidly as they had in prior years. Vermont PRAMS began collecting data in 2001 in response to increasing low birth weight rates in the state in the late 1990s. Forty-seven states, New York City, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia and the Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board, currently participate in PRAMS, representing approximately 83% of all U.S. live births.

Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)

Measuring the Health of Vermont's Youth

Vermont collects student health survey responses every two years.

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a collaboration between the Health Department, Agency of Education, and participating Vermont schools. Every two years, the survey is distributed around Vermont, and students anonymously share information on their health and risk behaviors. The survey covers topics like nutrition, exercise, sexual activity and substance use. The Vermont Health Department, CDC, and partners around Vermont use the survey results to keep our young people healthy and safe.

NOTE: The message at the top of certain CDC web pages regarding what the federal administration calls "gender ideology" does not reflect the views of the Vermont Department of Health. The Health Department will continue to collect data and share guidance for people of all identities to promote the physical, mental and social well-being of all people in Vermont.

School Health Profiles

School Health Profiles

Healthy Schools, Healthy Children

The School Health Profiles is a biannual set of surveys supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Adolescent and School Health’s (DASH). The Vermont Agency of Education collected data from 2002 to 2012. The Vermont Health Department began collecting data in 2014. Data are collected from middle and high school principals and lead health education teachers to assess school health policies, programs, and practices.

The School Health Profiles monitors school health education requirements and content, physical education and activity, school health policies related to HIV infection/AIDS, tobacco use prevention, nutrition, asthma management activities, family and community involvement in school health programs, and school health coordination.

Tobacco Use in Vermont

The Vermont Adult Tobacco Survey is a survey of Vermont adults (18+). The data are used to help evaluate the effectiveness of Vermont Tobacco Control Program efforts to reduce smoking and increase awareness and knowledge of smoking-related issues.

Vermont has conducted the Adult Tobacco Survey annually from 2001 to 2008, every other year from 2010 to 2016, and in 2022. The sample includes 1,600 to 3,000 respondents each year. Half are Vermonters who smoke and half are Vermonters who do not smoke. Results are weighted by age, gender, county, household composition, telephone type, and smoking status in order to compensate for differences between the sample and the overall Vermont adult population. The weighting procedure ensures that the sample is representative of this population, and permits us to draw inferences about the whole Vermont adult population.

The Vermont Adult Tobacco Survey provides outcome data on several key tobacco measures, including initiation of tobacco use, secondhand smoke exposure, awareness and utilization of cessation services, risk perception and social influences, and tobacco-related disparities.

The Survey Is Active Year-Round

If you receive a phone call on behalf of the Vermont Department of Health about participating in a survey and want to check to see if it is legitimate or have questions about the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), please call 800-869-2871 or email [email protected].

Each year, we interview more than 6,000 adult Vermonters selected randomly for the BRFSS. All respondents are asked a uniform set of questions and results are weighted to represent the adult population of the state. ICF Macro is the interviewing contractor for the Vermont BRFSS and may leave a message directing respondents to their call back number at 877-364-0915.

Personal health behaviors have a major impact on the health of the population and contribute to the leading causes of disease and premature death. The BRFSS tracks health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services among Vermont adults. The results are used to assess progress on public health goals, such as Healthy Vermonters 2030, and to plan, support and evaluate health promotion programs. Working in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Vermont has participated in the BRFSS since 1990. The CDC provides the Health Department with funding each year to support the implementation of the survey.
