About the Cover

Shown is a culture of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived neurons marked with microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2, green). DAPI (blue) stains all cell bodies. Even when carrying amyotrophic lateral schlerosis (ALS)-related mutations in kinesin family member 5A (KIF5A), hiPSCs continue to differentiate into neurons. However, these mutations lead to ALS pathology in hiPSC-derived neurons and primary neuron cultures. Manipulating ALS-related KIF5A isoforms so that they carry an isoelectric point more similar to normal KIF5A reduces ALS pathology. See the article by Pietro Zanella et al. for more information on how KIF5A may contribute to ALS. Cover image: Pietro Zanella
