About us
NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 620,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters. The network includes a system of 15 national marine sanctuaries and PapahÄnaumokuÄkea and Rose Atoll marine national monuments. Few places on the planet can compete with the diversity of the National Marine Sanctuary System, which protects America's most iconic natural and cultural marine resources. The system works with diverse partners and stakeholders to promote responsible, sustainable ocean uses that ensure the health of our most valued ocean places. A healthy ocean is the basis for thriving recreation, tourism and commercial activities that drive coastal economies.

Incredible STEM in action at Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary! More than 1,000 students representing 22 U.S. states and 18 countries designed, built, and piloted their own Remotely Operated Vehicles (miniâROVs) that dive deep to explore, sample, and even solve real ocean challenges in sanctuary habitats. Guidance from NOAA and educators transformed these youth into budding engineers and marine explorers. This competition is a powerful launchpad for future careers in ocean science. Special thanks Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) program, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary for making the 2025 MATE ROV COMPETITION World Championship possible. Introducing our latest #SaveSpectacular poster featuring Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary: a bold, visual journey into the depths of the Great Lakes. https://lnkd.in/gWtvnPZw About the poster- The sunrise casts a gentle, orange glow on a mooring buoy marking one of the many shipwrecks that rest on the bottom of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Scuba divers explore the pristine remains of a wooden schooner with masts still standing tall. History is well-preserved by the fresh, cold waters of this sanctuary, where lighthouses dot the shoreline, recreation opportunities are vast, and stories come to life. ð¨: Tonya Humiston/NOAA #SaveSpectacular #Shipwreck #ThunderBay #GraphicDesign #Art #Illustration #DigitalArt #NationalMarineSanctuary

Start your week off by taking a look at our new #SaveSpectacular commemorative poster, featuring Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary! About the poster- Maritime heritage lies at the center of Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary and helps connect the past to the present. Through stewardship of the region's historic maritime resources and shipwrecks, the sanctuary helps protect and preserve these important pieces of Great Lakes history. The echoes of this historic maritime past can still be felt along Wisconsin's shoreline. These ports have been tied to Wisconsin's maritime trades for over 150 years, and continue to preserve that history today. https://lnkd.in/gRTC6d9P ð¨: Kathryn Robertson & Tonya Humiston/NOAA #MarineLife #Wisconsin #GraphicDesign #Art #Illustration #DigitalArt #NationalMarineSanctuary

#NotesFromTheField: Honoring Military Children at NOAA Monitor National Marine Sanctuary Last month, Monitor National Marine Sanctuary partnered with The Marinersâ Museum and Park and Instant Teams to co-host Month of the Military Child, an annual awareness campaign that recognizes the sacrifices made by military kids and their families. The campaign culminated in an event at the museum called MilKids Fest, a day devoted to honoring children of military service members. Along with useful resources and information from trusted community partners, families were welcomed with fun activities, including 3D-printed replicas of USS Monitor artifacts, marine animal coloring, a spinning wheel of Monitor National Marine Sanctuary history, hands-on learning experiences with the museumâs education team, scavenger hunts, and much more. The event drew in scores of people, including over 500 members of the local military, their spouses, and children.
