(C. (J. (S. (J. (T DelState Continued from B1 The Delaware State defense has allowed 225 points and 3,187 net yards this season, but cornerback Victor Heflin feels the Hornets will be ready for a strong showing today.

The Hornets insist they're not continuing to accept losing. "It's not that we don't know how to win, but we don't know how to kick the other team when they are down," said Heflin, who leads the team with eight interceptions. "We seem to ease up just a little when we are ahead and that enables the other team to come back. I really think our defense is ready and we have something to prove this week." Northeastern won't be an easy team to shut down. The Huskies were blanked 31-0 two weeks ago at Maine, but their offense is explosive and has scored 169 points.

"The two tailback main threats Benoit, are who fresh- has Gary rushed for 704 yards and eight touchdowns, fourth-best nationally in Division I-AA, and junior quarterback Gregg Prebles, who has completed 63 of 142 passes for 694 yards and six TDs. The le Huskies also feature tight end Mark O'Brien, who has caught 29 passes for 295 yards, and freshman halfback Keith Wright, the 1981 Newark High All-Stater who ran 83 yards for his first collegiate touchdown last week. Correction Chris Harkins and Susan Trzuskowski, two members of Ursuline Academy's cross country team, were incorrectly identified from St. Elizabeth High on the Catholic Conference all-star team in Friday's editions of The Morning News. This was a reporting error.

I believe if we can play with them early we will be okay." Purzycki has been shuffling quarterbacks the last three weeks, but he plans to start senior Rod Lester against Northeastern. Lester has completed 56 of 133 passes for 827 yards and nine TDs, including three last week.

Injuries continue to plague the Hornets' defensive corps with tackle Tyrone Butler questionable with an ankle injury. Freshman Ed Williams will start if Butler cannot go. Irish Continued from B1 with impressive statistics. Both teams have good defenses Notre Dame might have the edge, ranked third in the nation against the rush while neither makes many mistakes. In the last four games, Penn State's opponents have had 24 turnovers, the Lions only six.

They lead the country in turnover differential. Notre Dame has lost just four fumbles all year. Offense might be the key; Penn State knows it can pass, Notre Dame is a bit shaky at times. Todd Blackledge leads a proven passing game; in fact some believe the junior ranks right behind celebrated Stanford star John Elway as a quarterback. But history should dispel that concern Delaware 3-0 coming off regular-season breaks including the classic 21-3 victory over a previously unbeaten Colgate in 1977. If anything, the rest was a plus, a time to heal and to afford halfback Cliff Clement extra practice time at fullback, where he'll be helping fill the void left by Rick Titus. Titus is out indefinitely after injurying his shoulder early in the game. Clement, still in the halfback rotation, will support Dan Reeder, who had been splitting time with Titus since preseason. Reeder gained 113 yards against the Hens' first 100-yard effort of the season.

"Reeder came in with a great deal of promise," said Ted Kempski of the Boston College transfer. "He terback Blackledge (140-of-241, 1,880 yards, 20 TDs) spearhead the attacks. They average 226 yards passing, 209 rushing; they have scored 20 touchdowns each way. Warner, who also is Penn State's No. 3 receiver, may be a particular problem for Notre Dame's defense.

"He and fullback Jon Williams out on pass patterns really well," inside linebacker Mark Zavagnin said. "After watching them on films, I'm very "I am concerned, I won't lie, about a letdown after Pitt," Faust said. "It was such a big game that the young men on our football team are still excited. We will have to be at our very best to win, mentally and "Our attitude has been great for every game," Paterno said. "We have a lot of confidence in ourselves and we've had a great week of practice.

It's emotion. We know they won't be flat, no matter what people say." Laurel Today's entries First Post 12:30 (EST) 1st cl, 3YO up, Imi. TOTE Handle $3,530,695, New season, high hopes at new-look Dover Downs plant Dover Bureau DOVER With serious financial problems facing the track, Dover Downs will open its 1982-83 harness racing season Sunday with a 1 p.m. post time. The track will operate Wednesday through Sunday until March 26. Sunday post time will be 1 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday will have an 8 p.m.

post: Ten races will be run Wednesday and Thursday with a 12-race program on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Bad winter weather conditions and the poor economy has caused the track serious problems over the last two years. Denis McGlynn, Dover Downs president and general manager, is hoping a large turnout of horses will them improve those conditions this year. "After two bad winters we have faced, I would say maybe this year is more important than usual for us," said McGlynn. "As far as it being a make-or-break year for us, they are 1 critical years in the racing business anymore.

I'll let you all know if we go broke this year. "We have been hit with two consecutive years of decline, but there are some things you just can't control. When you get several inches of snow and bad weather and have an economy that is going down the tubes, there isn't much you can do. I think if the weather co-operates, we have a shot for a good year. "The track is just in excellent shape right 1 now and all 480 stalls are full.

We had applications for 900 horses and many of them will ship in from other tracks to race. The horsemen like to race here because we have a track and it is easier for them to get around the turns. The word is out the horsemen know our track is extremely fast and they can get more miles out of their horses here." McGlynn's optimism centers around several new additions to the track, which includes 64 new sellcash betting windows, a second trifecta feature race and color television race monitors throughout the track. The third and final race of each card will now offer trifecta wagering. The sell-cash computerized system, designed for smaller tracks like Dover, will allow patrons to conduct all transactions at one window.

Under the system, an economy-saving move for the track, winning tickets can be cashed, one or a variety of bets can be placed on one ticket and different denominations of bets can be handled on the single ticket. "This system offers Dover Downs tremendous flexi-; bility to accommodate our patrons," said McGlynn. "We think the fans will enjoy and adapt to the new system in a short period of time." Eddie Davis of Smyrna, last year's driving champion at Dover who has won over 3,000 career races, will be driving in several races Sunday. Jim Porter, the second-leading driver last year, and Roger Botsch, the leading trainer, are also scheduled to return. Mehmet seeks upset in Meadowlands Cup Associated Press EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.

Bobby Frankel says. his colt, Mehmet, has beaten John Henry once and can do it again when they meet in today's $400,000 owlands Cup. "He's getting better with every race," said Frankel, a veteran trainer whose chestnut 4-year-old beat John Henry, the favorite, on grass at Santa Anita last month. "John Henry is great, but my horse is on his way up." However, the C.F. Burke Handicap in California was John Henry's first race after a six-month layoff due to: a leg injury.

Following that race, though, John Henry blazed to a spectacular comeback victory over rival Lehmi Gold, in the Oct. 31 Oak Tree Invitational at the same track. John Henry, a 7-year-old gelding, will help his chances of taking his second straight horse of the year, honors if he wins this sixth running of the Meadowlands Cup. Racing secretary Eual Wyatt has given John Henry, the top weight assignment of 129 pounds for the mile contest. No horse has ever won at the Meadowlands carrying such a heavy rider..
