Block spam calls with Smart Call on your Galaxy phone

How to block numbers

Managing unwanted calls is easier than ever with your Galaxy phone. Whether it's unknown calls or contacts you'd rather avoid, blocking numbers is a quick and effective way to maintain a clutter-free calling experience.

  1. Navigate to and open the Phone app, and then tap More options (the three vertical dots).
  2. Tap Settings, and then tap Block numbers.
  3. To block incoming calls from numbers that are not saved in your contacts or identified by Smart Call, tap the switch next to Block calls from unknown numbers to turn it on.

  4. To add a phone number you’d like to block, type the number, and then tap Add (the plus sign). Or, tap the Recents tab, the Message tab, or the Contacts tab to select a number to block.
  5. You can also block a number from your recent calls. In the Phone app, tap the Recents tab, and then tap the desired number.
  6. Tap Menu (the three horizontal lines with three dots) below the number, and then tap Block. Tap Block again when prompted.
  7. To remove a number from the Block list, open the Phone app, then tap More options (the three vertical dots). Tap Settings, and then tap Block numbers. Remove the desired number by tapping the red Minus icon.

To block voicemails from specific callers, you'll need to contact your carrier directly. Carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and United Cellular, among others, may offer voicemail blocking services to help you manage unwanted messages.

Use Smart Call for enhanced protection

Protect yourself from spam calls with Smart Call. This feature can be enabled whenever you need it, or disabled if you prefer not to use it. If you choose to report a call, you can narrow down the type of call using the provided categories.

  1. Navigate to and open the Phone app, tap More options (the three vertical dots), and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Caller ID and spam protection, and then tap the switch at the top of the screen to turn it on.Caller ID and spam protection screen with the switch enabled.
  3. Review the terms of service and privacy policy, and then tap Agree.
  4. Tap the switch next to Block spam and scam calls, and then tap your preferred option: 
    • Tap Block all spam and scam calls to block all calls identified as spam or scam, regardless of their risk level.
    • Tap Only block high-risk scam calls to block only the most dangerous or fraudulent calls, such as those known to be scams.

      Note: This option allows less severe spam calls to come through.
  5. When your phone rings, the Block/Report number option will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap this option during or after the call if you do not want to be contacted by that caller again.
    • Tap Block number to add the number to your blocked call list.
    • Tap Report Number if you feel the call is fraudulent, and then select a category. You can also include a comment when you report the number. Tap Report when you’re finished.

With Smart Call, you can stay protected from spam and scams while maintaining control over your calling experience.

Troubleshoot Smart Call

If Smart Call is not working on your phone, or if you’re receiving an error message when using the feature, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take. Your device may need a software update, or you may need to clear the Phone app’s data.

 

To check for software updates, navigate to Settings, tap Software update, and then tap Download and install. On certain carriers, you will need to tap System updates, and then tap Check for system updates.

 

You can also try clearing the data in the Phone app:

  1. Navigate to and open Settings. Tap Apps, and then search for and select the Phone app.
  2. Tap Storage, tap Clear data, and then tap Delete to confirm.

  3. Next, navigate to and open the Phone app. Tap More options (the three vertical dots).
  4. Tap Settings, tap Block numbers, and then tap the switch next to Block calls from unknown numbers to turn it on.
